Prime Video’s New The Boys Series With Jensen Ackles Gets Official Release Window

Prime Video’s new series, Vought Rising, has set a superhero landing for next year.

Okay, so season five of The Boys feels like the endgame – Homelander’s really cemented his power, and Butcher is laser-focused on wiping out all the Supes with that virus. While the finale promises to wrap things up for these characters, don’t think this is the last you’ll see of this world. Prime Video is already building a prequel, Vought Rising, and it’s got Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash on board, which is seriously exciting! It seems like they’re planning to expand the universe even after the main story concludes.

Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, recently told Collider that the Vought Rising spin-off is planned for release sometime next year, possibly a couple of months into 2027 due to scheduling. He’s already seen cuts of up to episode seven and feels confident about how it’s coming together, believing fans will enjoy it.

Kripke explained the prequel won’t be released until late 2026 because of the extensive visual effects work still needed. He said finishing the VFX will take around eight months, putting completion no earlier than November or December, and Amazon will then need time to prepare the show for release in different countries.

The announcement follows Jared Padalecki’s confirmation that filming finished in March 2026. This new prequel series will be the third spin-off of The Boys, which first aired in 2019. At the 2024 San Diego Comic Con, creator Eric Kripke revealed the show is a murder mystery set in the 1950s, focusing on the origins of The Boys and featuring early adventures of Soldier Boy, as well as the scheming of Stormfront (Cash).

Stormfront and Soldier Boy were both introduced in the early seasons of The Boys. Stormfront joined the Seven in season 2 and briefly became romantically involved with Homelander. Her history as Lady Liberty was later exposed, and she was killed off in season 3. Soldier Boy appeared in season 3 as a Superman-like hero and was revealed to be Homelander’s father. This also reunited Jensen Ackles with Eric Kripke, who created and ran Supernatural for its first five seasons.

Jared Padalecki will star in the upcoming series Vought Rising, but first, he’s returning as a main character in season 5 of The Boys. Despite trying to kill his own family in season 3, Soldier Boy is freed by Homelander. The two will eventually team up, as Soldier Boy seeks revenge on Butcher. According to creator Eric Kripke, the show will explore the complex dynamic between Soldier Boy and Homelander, and how each feels about the other.

Now that season 5 has finished, Vought Rising is the only series currently being developed. While Prime Video hasn’t officially renewed it, Jensen Ackles has said the plan was always for it to run for multiple seasons. Meanwhile, there’s still no news about whether Gen V will get a third season.

The cast of Vought Rising includes Jensen Ackles, Karl Urban, Mason Dye, Elizabeth Posey, Will Hochman, Jorden Myrie, Ethan Slater, and Nicolò Pasetti. Eric Kripke will be an executive producer, along with Paul Grellong, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Michaela Starr, Ackles, and Cash.

While Vought Rising has established a 2027 release window, The Boys season 5 will premiere on April 8.
