Murder mysteries are popular again, having made a big comeback since the late 2010s. Shows and movies like Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building have revived the genre, bringing back the classic whodunits and cozy mysteries that many people enjoy. Despite this resurgence, one of the best murder mystery shows currently airing – which recently released new episodes on Prime Video this March – hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.
All six episodes of the darkly funny mystery series Deadloch became available on Prime Video on March 20th. Created by Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan, the show playfully spoofs crime dramas while offering a feminist perspective. It stars Kate Box and Madeleine Sami as two very different detectives – one who knows the local Tasmanian town well, and one who’s from the city – who must work together to solve a series of disturbing murders. The second season sends the duo to the hot Northern Territory to investigate the death of Eddie’s ex-partner, but their investigation quickly takes an unexpected turn when they’re called to a small town called Barra Creek to identify a single body part.
Prime Video’s Deadloch Is One of the Best Murder Mystery Shows of the Decade
Shows like Only Murders in the Building and the Knives Out films have brought murder mysteries back to life, and Deadloch is a worthy addition to that group. This Amazon series, which critics overwhelmingly love (a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% audience score), cleverly combines a classic whodunit with witty satire. It’s a refreshing take on crime dramas, playfully subverting the usual serious tone and tired tropes—especially the focus on male detectives and the portrayal of female victims. Deadloch offers a funnier alternative to heavier crime shows, with a quirky sense of humor reminiscent of Letterkenny or Hot Fuzz. The show’s strength lies in the dynamic between its two lead detectives, making it funny, suspenseful, and darkly comedic.
Deadloch is back for a second season and it’s just as captivating and hilarious as before! The new episodes maintain the show’s unique blend of mystery and absurdity, and early reviews are 100% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise the season for building on the original while expanding its scope, and for remaining brilliantly funny, edgy, and satirical. Kate Box and Sami continue to shine as Dulcie and Eddie, and the addition of Luke Hemsworth as a charismatic, adventurous celebrity is a fantastic new element that perfectly fits Deadloch’s quirky vibe.
Will There Be a Deadloch Season 3?
It’s currently unclear whether Deadloch will return for a third season. While there’s been no official announcement, the show’s creators previously told The Sydney Morning Herald they filmed Season 2 as if it were the finale. Whether the show gets renewed will likely depend on how well Season 2 was received by audiences.
