With the end of The Expanse a few years ago, fans are hoping a new show on Prime Video can fill the void in science fiction television. The Expanse finished after six seasons, and despite being considered one of the greatest sci-fi series ever made, it was cancelled due to low ratings.
Even now, The Expanse is frequently considered one of the greatest science fiction TV shows ever made, demonstrating its enduring popularity and how hard it would be to find a replacement. But a new sci-fi series coming to Prime Video might just do that.
Prime Video’s Stargate Reboot Can Be The Next Great TV Space Opera
Prime Video announced in November 2025 that it’s creating a new version of Stargate. Stargate is a well-loved science fiction series, gaining popularity after iconic franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek. The original Stargate films and TV shows were generally successful, and fans are excited about the potential of a modern reboot.
With good writing and a modern budget, a reboot of Stargate has the potential to become Prime Video’s next big space opera. The original series was known for its compelling drama, similar to The Expanse, and could be even better with Prime Video’s current resources. If it succeeds, Stargate could easily fill the void left by The Expanse.
There Hasn’t Been A Show Like The Expanse Since The Prime Video Series Ended
With talk of a new Stargate series, it’s clear there hasn’t been a science fiction show quite like The Expanse since it ended in 2022. The Expanse uniquely combined futuristic, outer-space concepts with realistic and engaging human stories, a balance that recent Star Wars projects have struggled to achieve.
Like The Expanse, Stargate explores similar themes. Both shows involve massive gates created by an ancient alien civilization, which open the way to different planets, and both feature political conflicts as humanity expands into space.
Many sci-fi series haven’t captured the magic of The Expanse, but Stargate has the potential to fill that void. It’s still uncertain if it will succeed, but Stargate is currently the most promising successor since The Expanse ended. Prime Video might have finally found a worthy replacement for the show.
