Primitive War Finally Sets U.S. Streaming Release Date

The dinosaur movie often compared to Jurassic Park is coming to Hulu! It had a small theatrical release last year with Jurassic World Rebirth, and now it will be available to stream for Hulu subscribers.

Hulu will begin streaming the movie Primitive War on April 4, 2026. Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Ethan Pettus, who also co-wrote the script with director Luke Sparke, the film comes from Australia. The cast includes Ryan Kwanten (known for Kindred), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Nick Wechsler (The Hunting Party), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), and Anthony Ingruber (The Age of Adaline).

Primitive War Is a Vietnam War Movie, But With Dinosaurs

Imagine a Vietnam War movie, but instead of fighting enemy soldiers, the American recon unit faces terrifying dinosaurs. That’s the basic idea behind Primitive War. Set in the jungles of Vietnam in 1968, the film follows a team sent to locate a lost platoon, only to discover the area is overrun with flesh-eating dinosaurs.

Unlike the Jurassic Park films, Primitive War doesn’t hold back on violence. It’s rated R for a reason, with brutal and graphic scenes of dinosaurs tearing people apart. This is much more intense than the milder violence shown in the PG-13 rated Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies.

The movie Primitive War has been well-received by audiences, earning an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics give it a 63% rating, which is surprisingly better than many of the Jurassic Park sequels – even higher than the 50% score for Jurassic World Rebirth. Despite having a smaller budget than the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films, Primitive War has received significant praise, with some viewers suggesting the Jurassic Park franchise should be taking cues from it.

While the first Jurassic Park movie and even The Lost World have some frightening scenes, the series generally avoids showing the truly brutal consequences of humans encountering dinosaurs, according to Rosenberg. Primitive War, however, doesn’t hold back, fully embracing its mature rating to deliver the graphic, bloody battles that fans have wanted from the Jurassic Park franchise for years.

Good news for movie fans! A sequel is planned, with a release currently set for 2027. Luke Sparke, who worked on the first film, will be back to write and direct.

Primitive War will start streaming on Hulu on Apr. 4, 2026.
