Today, Ubisoft announced it’s cancelling its remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, along with five other games that were still in development. This is part of a large restructuring effort for the company. Additionally, seven other projects are being pushed back to a later date, and Ubisoft will announce job cuts on February 12, 2026.
Ubisoft is undergoing a significant overhaul to revitalize the company and regain its position as an industry leader. After a period of challenges, they’re focusing on improving the quality of their open-world games and have cancelled projects that don’t meet these new standards. This reset aims to deliver a strong turnaround and return to producing top-quality games.
The cancelled projects are:
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake
- One unannounced game
- Three new IPs
- One mobile game
Ubisoft also announced they’re giving seven games extra development time to improve their quality and ensure they’re successful in the long run. The company hasn’t revealed which games are being delayed.
The team behind the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has explained why they cancelled the project. They said that while the game showed promise, they couldn’t achieve the quality their fans expect. Continuing development would have taken too much time and money, and they didn’t want to release a game that didn’t live up to the standards of the original Sands of Time.
Ubisoft founder and CEO Yves Guillemot shared the following:
The AAA game industry is becoming increasingly competitive and expensive, and building successful franchises is harder than ever. However, when AAA games do succeed, they can be incredibly profitable. To ensure Ubisoft’s long-term growth, we’re making significant changes to how we operate. We’re focusing on delivering high-quality games built around our two main strengths: immersive Open World Adventures and games designed for ongoing live services (GaaS).
