Princess Diaries 3 Director Teases ‘Fun Returns’ After Chris Pine Confirmation

Following a recent hint from author Meg Cabot that Chris Pine will reprise his role, the director of the new film is sharing some updates. Adele Lim has indicated that progress on the movie is ‘going well’ and things are looking promising for fans.

At the Gold Gala, Lim discussed The Princess Diaries 3 and emphasized how much the film means to fans. She explained, “We really want to get the story right. There aren’t many movies about queens achieving their full potential—lots focus on princesses getting to be princesses. We’re aiming to show a woman truly embracing her power.”

While the details of filming and production are still being finalized, Anne Hathaway is confirmed to reprise her role as the Queen of Genovia. According to producer Julie Lim, fans of the first two movies can expect a lot of familiar and enjoyable elements in the new film.

New Details Emerge about Princess Diaries 3’s Plot & Location

The upcoming Princess Diaries movie will be set in Genovia, and filming will take place across Europe to showcase its beauty. While The Princess Diaries 2 offered only glimpses of the country, this new film aims to fully reveal Genovia to the audience, as shared by Lim.

Lim wasn’t able to confirm whether Chris Pine will reprise his role as Lord Nicholas Devereaux in the next Princess Diaries movie. His potential involvement is currently uncertain, with some reports suggesting he might not return, but the latest information is encouraging.

Recently, author John Cabot hinted that Chris Pine will appear in the upcoming sequel. Speaking at BookCon in New York City, Cabot mentioned that the story will bring everyone back together, and confirmed Pine’s involvement, along with Robert Schwartzman, according to Just Jared.

We’re not sure when filming will start. Anne Hathaway is incredibly busy with a lot of projects right now. Eventually, she’ll get to the set – we’ve already rented the castle location and it’s just waiting for us! This third movie is going to be fantastic.

New Princess Diaries Movie Comes 2 Decades After Last Installment

If The Princess Diaries 3 is made, it will have been over twenty years since Anne Hathaway last played the charming princess of Genovia. The second movie, Royal Engagement, came out in 2004 and brought back most of the original cast, including Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, and Larry Miller.

Talk of another film started back in 2016 when director Garry Marshall shared his ideas for a third movie. Sadly, his passing put those plans on hold. Then, in 2022, Disney announced they were ready to begin work on the sequel, and in October 2024, Lim was confirmed as the director, with plans for the original actress to return.

The Princess Diaries 3 does not have a release date at this time.
