Fans of horror master Junji Ito had been eagerly waiting for Adult Swim’s adaptation of Uzumaki. However, many felt that the series fell short compared to the exceptional artwork of its creator. The production company behind this controversial project is Production I.G., known for their work on popular anime like Kaiju No. 8, Haikyu, and Psycho-Pass. At Anime Expo this year, President Maki Terashima-Furuta from Production I.G. acknowledged the fan reaction to Uzumaki.
At Anime Expo every year, Production I.G. shares insights about their past, present, and future endeavors. During her address to the audience, Terashima-Furuta acknowledged that Uzumaki, one of their projects, didn’t get as positive a response as she expected, saying “Although many weren’t thrilled with Uzumaki, I was the one who produced it.” The criticism towards Uzumaki came swiftly due to animation that viewers felt fell short compared to Junji Ito’s original artwork and alterations made in the anime adaptation from the source manga.
Junji Ito’s Crimson
At this year’s Japan Expo in Franchise, it was announced that Junji Ito’s Crimson will continue its anthology style for more terrifying campfire tales from the horror master’s collection. Currently, they haven’t confirmed which stories will be included in this upcoming anime series, but there are still many untapped stories left to adapt from the vast library of Junji Ito, such as those not previously featured in shows like The Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito’s Maniac: Japanese Tales of The Macabre. Additionally, a new trailer was unveiled to generate excitement for the series, along with a statement from Ito himself.
At present, an anime adaptation titled ‘Junji Ito’s Crimson‘ is underway, derived from my own work. Merely hearing
Junji Ito’s Live-Action Future
Ito’s future extends beyond his renowned manga career and the burgeoning anime adaptations. Fangoria Studios is developing a trilogy of live-action movies based on Ito’s works, with “Bloodsucking Darkness” and “Secret of The Haunted House” being two of the confirmed titles. Although no release dates have been announced, these films will join other installments such as “Tomie” and “Uzumaki”.
