Due to its strong performance in theaters and positive feedback from critics, the streaming release of Project Hail Mary has been delayed to allow more people to see it on the big screen.
Starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is currently the third-highest-grossing movie of 2026 worldwide, surpassed only by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Chinese film Pegasus 3.
The film has become Amazon MGM Studios’ most successful release ever, so it’s no surprise the studio wants to build on that success even further.

Miller announced on X (formerly Twitter) that MGM has decided to keep the movie ‘Project Hail Mary’ in theaters for a longer period, meaning it won’t be available to stream for a while.
He emphasized that this film is best experienced in a cinema, especially on a large screen. It’s returning to IMAX for just one week starting this weekend, so he encourages everyone to see it in theaters now!
We don’t know yet when the film will be available for streaming, but it’s still showing in many theaters nationwide, so you can still see it on the big screen now.
Since Amazon MGM Studios made the film, it will likely be available on Prime Video at some point. We’ll share the streaming release date as soon as we have it.
The movie is adapted from Andy Weir’s novel and features Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, an astronaut who wakes up in space with amnesia. He has no memory of his identity, how he ended up there, or what his task is.
The movie gradually reveals the importance of the main character’s mission, aided by flashbacks. Along the way, he forms a connection with Rocky, a lovable alien made of rock who was also sent into space on a similar quest.
In a 4-star review, TopMob described the film as heartwarming science fiction. They noted that even though it deals with serious themes, it has a hopeful and uplifting tone, and that the vastness of space feels less daunting when experienced with a friendly companion.
Project Hail Mary is now showing in UK cinemas.
