Xbox is aiming high with its next console, Project Helix. Features like ray tracing, advanced frame generation using machine learning, and neural rendering sound fantastic, but limited memory and storage space could hold it back. So, what’s the answer?
So, I was reading up on what Microsoft’s planning for the next generation of consoles, and apparently, they’re really focusing on how textures look. Jason Ronald, a VP at Microsoft, talked about this at GDC 2026. They’re using some advanced texture compression – even incorporating new tech with neural networks! But it’s not just that; they’re also going all-in on something called Zstandard. Basically, with the newest version of DirectStorage – which now supports Zstandard – we’re gonna be able to load game assets directly from the SSD super fast. It should make a huge difference in loading times and overall game performance, which is awesome!
Over the next few months, more details will be shared. As previously announced after GDC, Xbox plans to begin sending early Project Helix development kits to developers starting in 2027.
While the information is interesting, it doesn’t confirm whether Frame Gen will be used to improve older Xbox Series X/S games or how the new Windows 11 full-screen mode will function. However, it’s good to see Microsoft acknowledges the current memory shortage, and Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has even stated it might affect the price and release of Project Helix.
Keep checking back for more news about the console, which is currently expected to release in late 2027. We might even get a first look during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7th!
