Sanzaru Games, known for developing titles like Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for PlayStation 3, as well as the collections for Sly Cooper and God of War, has been closed down as part of recent layoffs at Oculus Studios.
After Meta announced plans to cut about 10% of its Reality Labs staff yesterday, some of those impacted have begun sharing news on social media. Ray West, a developer at Sanzaru Games, posted on LinkedIn (reported by VGC) that several Meta game studios, including Sanzaru, were closed today.
Several development teams have been shut down recently. Twisted Pixel Games, known for hits like ‘Splosion Man and most recently Marvel’s Deadpool VR, is one of them. Armature Studio, the team behind games like Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and the Resident Evil 4 VR port for Meta Quest 2, was also affected by the layoffs.
A Meta representative confirmed the end of several developer programs, explaining that the company is redirecting funds from its Metaverse projects to focus more on wearable technology. They stated that the money saved will be used to expand their wearables business this year.
The term “Wearables” refers to the company’s range of AI smart glasses and wristbands.
So, I remember when the Sly Cooper games were made by Sucker Punch, but then Sanzaru Games took over for Thieves in Time back in 2013. And the next year, they actually remastered both The Sly Collection and the God of War Collection for the PS3, which was awesome!
Sanzaru Games operated as an independent studio until 2020, when Facebook (now Meta) acquired them after they developed Asgard’s Wrath for the Oculus Rift. They went on to create Asgard’s Wrath 2, widely considered a top VR game.
