A game originally released on PS4 in 2016 is now available for free to players with a PS5 or PS5 Pro. The surprise update came this week, even though the game’s developer is no longer around, and it’s a smaller, single-player title that might not be on everyone’s radar in 2025. Despite this, it was a well-regarded PS4 game, and players who already own the PS4 version will receive the PS5 upgrade at no cost, while new players would normally have to pay $39.99.
The game Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, originally released for PS4 in 2016 and now available on PS5, combines stealth and real-time tactics. This PS5 release is happening before the launch of its expansion, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – Aiko’s Choice, which arrives on PS5 December 6th. While Aiko’s Choice has been available on PC since 2021, it hasn’t been released on consoles until now. It’s unclear why it’s taking four years to bring the expansion to consoles, nine years after the original game came out, but it’s probably the reason the base game was also updated for PS5 and is receiving a free upgrade.
About the Game
If you haven’t played Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun before, it’s a challenging stealth game set in feudal Japan. You control a team of skilled operatives who specialize in sneaking into enemy territory, and the game focuses on planning exactly how to do so.
Released in 2016, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun proved to be a surprisingly successful game. It received high praise from critics, earning an 85 on Metacritic, and sold well enough to warrant both an expansion and a board game version. Players also loved it, giving the game an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam – based on 95% of over 8,800 reviews – and a 4.55 out of 5 star rating on the PlayStation Store from more than 4,300 reviews.
If you didn’t buy this game on PS4 and aren’t eligible for a free PS5 upgrade, there are other good horror games available, some even free. However, if you enjoy stealth and strategy games, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun might seem a bit pricey at $40 in 2025. Consider adding it to your PlayStation Store wishlist and waiting for a sale – it’s a fantastic stealth game and an even better tactical one.
