PS5 players in the UK and Ireland are starting to receive notifications asking them to verify their age. This change has happened quite recently.
To follow international rules, users will need to confirm their age later this year to keep using messaging and voice chat on their consoles.
The message contains a QR code. Scanning it with your phone will take you to Sony’s website, where you can confirm your age in one of three ways.
- Facial scan (take a photo of yourself and have the system give you an “age estimation”)
- ID (use identification documentation like a driving license, passport, or ID cards to prove your age)
- Mobile number (use a verification code sent as a text message to your phone)
You can find an FAQ on the whole process by clicking through here, via a PlayStation support page.
This age verification step complies with new laws in the UK and Ireland requiring proof of age to access online content, especially material considered adult in nature.
Data security is still a big worry for many, so it will be interesting to see how PS5 users react to this news.
