With the substantial effect of tariffs on Sony’s profits becoming apparent, it’s now confirmed that the price of the PlayStation 5 is set to rise in the United States. From August 21st, the standard PS5 will be priced at $549.99, while the Digital Edition will sell for $499.99. The high-end PS5 Pro will retail for $749.99.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some news that might hit your wallet a bit. Every gaming console out there just saw a $50 boost in their prices, making them a tad pricier than before. However, on the bright side, accessory prices remain unchanged. Sony has officially confirmed that there are no further price changes planned for other markets as well. Although this is the first time US gamers are feeling the pinch, it’s not the case for other regions – especially Japan, which has experienced not one but two console price hikes in the last two years.
It’s worth noting that even companies like Nintendo and Xbox aren’t exempt from changes. In the U.S., there have been price hikes for Xbox Series X/S consoles and accessories in recent times. Initially, Microsoft intended to implement a $80 increase for their primary games this Holiday season, but later reconsidered.
Back in June, I found myself surprised by Nintendo’s decision to raise the prices of the accessories for the upcoming Switch 2. It wasn’t just the new model that was affected; even the original Nintendo Switch saw price increases across the board in Canada. This included the base model, the OLED version, and the Switch Lite.
