PS5 Creeps Past 7 Million Sales in Japan

I must admit, it’s no surprise that Nintendo has been reigning supreme in Japan’s console market for quite a while now. However, contrary to what many might think, the PlayStation 5 has managed to carve out a niche for itself in Sony’s home turf.

Despite facing challenges such as initial inventory shortages and price increases, the current generation system has remarkably managed to surpass 7 million in total sales.

The base model, the all-digital model, and the PS5 Pro all count towards that figure.

As a gamer, I can share that over the past year, my console has successfully moved approximately one million units, bringing its total sales to six million by September 2024. While this number might not blow anyone away, it’s been consistently selling well.

Reflecting on the recent adjustments in pricing, effective last September, I must admit that these changes seemed to significantly impact sales figures for quite a few weeks thereafter.

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I find it fascinating to ponder about the success of different game consoles, especially when comparing the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and the upcoming PlayStation 5 (PS5). In Japan, the PS4 has sold between 8 and 9 million units throughout its lifetime. If the PS5 can mimic this achievement over the next few years, I’d consider it a commendable accomplishment.

As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but wonder about Sony’s plans for the next-gen console, the PS6. Will they double down on their efforts in Japan, a market close to my heart? The anticipation is electrifying!
