While the PS5 has been a hit for Sony, it feels like we’re still early in its lifespan. That’s why news about a potential PlayStation 6 – especially with Sony’s recent deal with AMD – is causing some unease. It’s also worth noting that Sony hasn’t had a perfect track record lately, with some attempts at ongoing service games failing and fewer exclusive games being released.
Despite past challenges, Sony remains optimistic about the PlayStation 5. In a recent call with investors, CFO Lin Tao explained that the company sees the PS5 as still having a lot of potential and plans to continue growing its user base. They aim to boost sales, not just for the holiday season, but to build long-term customer loyalty and profitability.
This clarifies why the company aims to sell 90 million consoles by the end of 2025. Regarding potential future consoles or new versions, Tao stated they have no further information to share at this time.
During the call, she highlighted that making money from their existing users is more important than simply selling more hardware. They plan to do this, for example, with the upcoming game Marvel’s Wolverine, which they expect to be a major release next year.
Sony hasn’t officially said anything about the PlayStation 6, but rumors are circulating. Some reports suggest it could be released in 2027, and the internal components are supposedly already planned. However, even if the PS6 does come out by then, Sony will continue to support the PlayStation 5.
Considering how many PS4 games were also available on the PS5, and with rumors suggesting the upcoming PS6 Portable can play PS5 games easily, it’s likely we’ll see support for older games continue for a long time.
