Honestly, a lot of PlayStation players feel like this generation hasn’t quite hit its stride yet, but even so, the PS5 has been a massive success. It’s been flying off the shelves, despite some feeling like the games haven’t fully delivered on the potential of the console.
Since launching in 2020, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been the top-selling console in the US. After five years, it’s become the second-best-selling PlayStation of all time, surpassed only by the incredibly popular PlayStation 2.
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the PlayStation 5 has sold 26.7 million units in the United States as of October 4, 2025.
It’s an impressive feat when you consider the ups and downs of this console generation.
Sony faced challenges with the PS5 launch due to both the pandemic, which disrupted production and delivery, and their strategy of marketing the console as a high-end, expensive product.
The PS5 is Sony’s least affordable console in over a decade, even before recent price hikes, due to the high cost of the system itself, games, and add-ons. It’s become more expensive than the PS3 was at launch.
Despite the challenges, the PlayStation 5 has been incredibly successful. It’s projected to sell over 100 million units globally, likely making it one of the best-selling game consoles ever.
Now that the PlayStation 5 has been out for five years, what are your thoughts on it? Do you think its impressive sales figures are justified? And do you think any console will ever surpass the popularity of the PlayStation 2? Share your opinions below!
