The PlayStation 5 Pro is gaining renewed attention more than a year after its launch, likely due to the impressive visual effects achieved by Resident Evil Requiem using a technology called PSSR 2.
Sony plans to release an improved version of its image upscaling technology in March. This update will be optional for all games and is expected to fix problems users have experienced with the original version.
PSSR, which stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is a technology that uses artificial intelligence to improve image quality. It takes images that are blurry or have low resolution and reconstructs them to be sharper and more detailed.
Essentially, it frees up developers to focus on things like ray tracing and visual effects, as it reduces the amount of processing power needed for standard resolutions.
Initially, PlayStation’s temporal anti-aliasing (PSSR) suffered from visual problems like ghosting and image distortions. However, the system’s architect, Mark Cerny, stated it would improve, and we’re already seeing that with Resident Evil Requiem. The game now delivers image quality more comparable to PC technologies like the newest version of Nvidia’s DLSS.
Crimson Desert will be the next game built to fully utilize the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, and it will be interesting to compare how much performance Pearl Abyss achieves with it compared to Capcom’s results.
Despite everything, the recent improvements have caused a surge in demand for the PS5 Pro, and it’s currently sold out on PlayStation’s official website in the US. While it’s still possible to find elsewhere, this shows people are becoming more interested in the console.
I’ve noticed a lot of people jumping for the upgraded system, and honestly, I think the rumors about the PS6 being delayed are playing a big part. We were all expecting it around late 2027, but now there’s talk that Sony might have to push it back to 2028, or even later, because of problems getting enough RAM. It makes sense – if you’re not sure when the next console is coming, you might want to boost your current one!
We’ll get a much clearer understanding of how effective PSSR 2 is once more games start using it and the feature is available in older software. Early reports from tech experts, like Digital Foundry, suggest it’s a significant improvement, which is encouraging.
