Sales of the PlayStation 5 have surged in Japan recently, thanks to the release of a new version of the console tailored for the Japanese market.
Through November 23rd, Japan saw 23,381 purchases of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – roughly equivalent to two or three days of typical sales. This represents a significant increase from the previous week, when sales totaled only 5,855.
The PlayStation 5 model released specifically for Japan, which is more affordable and only works in Japan, sold about four times as many units in its first few days compared to previous sales. While the Nintendo Switch continues to sell much better – over 126,000 units between November 17th and 23rd – the PS5 has experienced a clear increase in sales.
Sony is releasing a new, cheaper version of the PS5 in Japan, priced at ¥55,000 (around $350) – a significant drop from the previous ¥72,980 ($473). However, this version is locked to the Japanese language and requires a Japanese PlayStation Network account, making it difficult to use outside of Japan. This move is clearly aimed at boosting sales within the Japanese market. Nintendo has taken a similar approach with the Switch, and it’s proven to be successful for them.
Here’s how the Japanese hardware sales look overall for 17th-23rd November (via Gematsu):
- Switch 2 – 126,953
