Sony recently announced its financial results for the last three months of 2026, ending March 31st. The PlayStation 5 continues to be a success, with a total of 93.7 million units shipped – 1.5 million of those in the last quarter. While these numbers are strong, they’re a bit lower than the 2.4 million shipped during the same period last year, even before the recent price increases.
PlayStation has sold a combined 74.6 million software units on both the PS4 and PS5, which is 1.5 million fewer than last year. Of those sales, games made directly by PlayStation (first-party titles) accounted for 5.8 million units, a decrease of 100,000 from the previous year. More and more people are choosing to download full game versions digitally, with digital downloads now making up 85% of all sales. The PlayStation Network currently has 125 million active users each month.
Sony predicts its operating income will remain roughly the same for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. This is because they are increasing investments in their next-generation platform. However, they still anticipate a significant increase – a double-digit percentage gain – in profits for the current year.
Sony’s PS5 sales depend on securing enough memory at affordable prices – a challenge considering the current memory shortage. They anticipate hardware profits will be similar to last year. While this might not sound like a huge goal, with talk of a PS6 potentially launching in late 2027, Sony could have significant plans for the future.
