It turns out Sony doesn’t always need a massive budget to create a hit game. The side-scrolling game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, has been surprisingly successful.
A Metroidvania game developed by Mega Cat Studios unexpectedly launched during a State of Play presentation and quickly gained traction. By February 2026, it had reached 14th place in the overall Circana sales charts, and impressively, landed at number six on the PlayStation-specific top ten list.
It’s worth remembering that these charts rank games by how much money they made, not how many copies were sold. That’s why the platformer game did surprisingly well.
Because the game was priced at only $29.99, it needed to sell twice as many copies as some more expensive games it outperformed, such as the new release My Hero Academia: All’s Justice, which costs $59.99.
This shows there’s definitely an audience for smaller, directly-developed games from PlayStation. While opinions on Sons of Sparta are mixed – some people really enjoy it, others find it lacking – the game has still been a significant win overall.
More like this please, Sony.
