Update [April 16, 2026, 12:45 PM]: It’s now clear that the rumor about a State of Play happening on April 16th was incorrect.
It’s currently Thursday in the UK and Europe, while people in America, especially on the East Coast, are starting their day.
Sony hasn’t announced any plans for a State of Play event, either today or in the near future, so the rumor turned out to be false.
Just to be clear, Nate, who first reported this, is usually very reliable. He did mention his information wasn’t confirmed, so it seems like something got lost in translation somewhere.
We’ll update you if there’s any new information or if PlayStation officially confirms anything.
As a big fan, I was really hoping we’d get a State of Play this week! There were rumors floating around that it would happen on April 16th, but it looks like that’s probably not going to happen now. We’ve passed the likely timeframe, and it’s a bit disappointing.
Although it’s unlikely, Sony could announce and hold its event on the same day. However, the company usually provides at least a full day’s notice beforehand, so it’s not typical behavior for them.
Nate the Hate, a reliable source of information, suggested a possible event date of April 16th, but stressed that this wasn’t confirmed.
He later followed up saying he’d been unable to lock this date down.
As of right now, it doesn’t seem likely to happen. It’s already April 16th in some parts of the world, and Sony still hasn’t made any announcement.
This information may have been accidentally connected to the upcoming Xbox Metro 2039 livestream later today. Also, don’t forget the Galaxies Gaming Showcase happening on April 16th.
We were honestly confused by all the guessing, especially since summer is almost here.
With a major State of Play likely planned for June before the Summer Game Fest, it’s questionable whether there’s enough new game information to justify holding another one in April.
Okay, so I heard the buzz was mostly about games from smaller studios, but come on – don’t you think the big publishers are saving their announcements for the spring and summer? It just makes sense to me that they’d want to reveal stuff when more people are paying attention.
It remains to be seen what will happen, but a State of Play event might actually be coming soon, as was previously suggested. However, it’s now almost certain that it won’t be happening on April 16th.
