The PS5 has now overtaken the PS3 in terms of lifetime sales in the US.
According to recent data from Circana (previously NPD), Sony’s PlayStation 5 has now sold more units than the PlayStation 3 by September of this year, according to analyst Mat Piscatella.
If you played games on the PlayStation 3, you probably recall how difficult it was for the system in its early years. It faced a lot of challenges when it first came out.
The Xbox 360 was a huge hit in the United States, initially proving more popular than the PlayStation 3. But ultimately, the PS3 went on to sell more units globally than the cheaper Xbox 360.
In total, the product sold approximately 87 million copies, including around 23 million in the United States.
It’s not surprising that the PS5 is outselling PlayStation’s previous least successful console. Considering the PS5 is expected to be available for a few more years, this is a good sign and sets a positive standard for future performance.
Just how successful will the PlayStation 5 be? Do you believe it will sell more units than the PS4, or will its popularity eventually level off? And feel free to share your early thoughts on what the PS6 might be like in the comments!
