Today marks the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5, and people are already wondering what Sony has planned for the future. Over the past year, rumors about the PS6 have been circulating, suggesting it might be a less dramatically different upgrade than previous consoles, and could be accompanied by a handheld gaming device.
Sony is staying quiet about future plans, and is currently focused on continuing to support the existing PS5 model. In a recent BBC interview, Sony executive Eric Lempel stated that the console is now performing very well five years into its lifecycle. He emphasized that Sony has a strong lineup of games and content planned, and will therefore continue to focus on the current PS5.
Lempel isn’t sharing details about the upcoming content, but he hinted that the console’s most popular game hasn’t been released yet. He playfully added, “I won’t say which one, but it’s still on its way!”
GTA 6 is the most likely game to be the next huge hit. Rockstar Games’ upcoming release is predicted to be a record-breaking event, especially considering how incredibly popular the previous game was.
The hint is more intriguing if Lempel is referring to major games developed directly by PlayStation for the PS5. While Marvel’s Wolverine and Intergalactic are confirmed, it’s likely PlayStation Studios has other unannounced projects in the works before the next console, the PS6, is released.
Rumors suggest the new device could be released in 2027. It’s expected to include a portable device similar to the PS Portal, which has been more successful than anticipated. According to Lempel, the PS Portal has “exceeded our expectations” and is “performing really well.”
