Sony has begun discussing its plans for the PlayStation 6, including when it might be released and how much it could cost. Although Sony hasn’t officially announced the PS6 yet, they’ve confirmed they’re already developing the next PlayStation console. Current estimates suggest it could launch as early as 2027, similar to the timeframe between the PS4 and PS5 releases. However, Sony admits they’re still figuring out many details for the PS6 and have more questions than definitive answers at this point.
Following the release of Sony’s recent financial report, CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed questions about the company’s plans, including the PS6. Totoki explained that Sony hasn’t yet determined when the PS6 will launch or how much it will cost. Rising manufacturing costs are forcing them to carefully consider their options and adjust their business strategy before making any decisions about the next console.
Sony hasn’t announced when the new console will be released or how much it will cost. Hiroki Totoki stated they are closely monitoring the market. He explained that memory prices are expected to remain high in 2027 due to ongoing supply shortages, and they need to consider this when making their plans.

The biggest challenge for the PlayStation 6 will likely be its price. Recent shortages of computer memory have already caused Sony to raise the price of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, with the Pro now costing $900. If these manufacturing problems persist, the PS6 could end up costing around $1000 when it’s released. That high of a price would be a major problem for Sony, as they’ve already had trouble selling enough PS5 consoles since the price increase.
Even after the PS6 comes out, the PS5 will likely remain a popular and supported console for years. Sony continued to support the PS4 with new game releases until 2026, and we can expect a similar lifespan for the PS5. This means PlayStation fans don’t need to rush out and buy a PS6 as soon as it’s available.
