Fantasy novels are often known for being quite long, and series like The Stormlight Archive, The Wheel of Time, and A Song of Ice and Fire are prime examples. These popular books and series require a significant time commitment from readers. While they’re usually rewarding, sometimes it’s nice to pick up a shorter, quicker read instead.
Luckily, there are some quick, enjoyable reads available in the fantasy genre. Several excellent stories can be finished in a single day. These include a fresh take on a classic fairytale from a writer specializing in short fantasy and horror, and a rare shorter work by Brandon Sanderson – books readers will easily devour.
5) Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher

As a big fantasy fan, I’ve been exploring T. Kingfisher’s work, and Thornhedge is a fantastic place to start. It’s a really clever retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but with a wonderfully dark and whimsical twist. The story begins with a character named Toadling, who was taken by the fae as a baby and raised in their world. As an adult, she’s sent back to bless the human child who took her place, but naturally, things go wrong. We then jump forward a century to follow a knight trying to break a curse – and Toadling has to fight against that. What’s amazing is how much story Kingfisher packs into under 150 pages! The characters are flawed and endearing, the world is truly unique and memorable, and it’s just a really well-done fairytale reimagining. I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for something a little different.
4) Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark

P. Djèlí Clark is a fantastic fantasy author, and Ring Shout is one of his most celebrated books. It’s a gripping story you can easily finish in a day. The novella is set in a 1915 America that’s been reimagined, where fear and hatred take the form of monstrous creatures called Ku Kluxes. We follow Maryse Boudreaux, a member of the resistance, and her team of demon hunters as they fight to stop Hell from breaking through into their world. Ring Shout is beautifully written and deeply moving, offering important insights into racism, featuring characters you’ll root for, and packed with exciting action. It’s a great choice for anyone who enjoys horror or fantasy.
3) Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

If you like stories rooted in Greek mythology, you should definitely read Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi. It’s a relatively quick read, clocking in at just under 300 pages, easily enjoyed in a day. The book, which draws inspiration from the myth of the Minotaur’s labyrinth and classic fantasy worlds, takes place in a seemingly infinite house that the main character, Piranesi, explores. He eventually uncovers a hidden presence and a deeper truth, leading to a captivating and surprising story that’s best discovered without knowing too much beforehand. The beautiful writing and unique atmosphere make it a truly immersive experience. There’s a good reason Clarke’s 2020 novel is so highly praised, and it’s a must-read for any dedicated fantasy fan.
2) Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series currently includes 11 books, all of which are shorter novellas. The books are interconnected, but many can be enjoyed as standalone stories. Every Heart a Doorway is the first book and a perfect choice for a quick fantasy read. If you like it, there are plenty more stories in the series to enjoy! This book offers a unique take on the portal fantasy genre, focusing on the children who return from magical worlds and how those experiences change them. It delves into the emotional impact of these journeys, something often missed in traditional portal fantasies. Fantasy fans will love how it takes a familiar concept and explores the difficult truths beneath the surface. It’s a charming, moving story that celebrates the power of stories and the joy of reading.
1) The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe usually features long books, but The Emperor’s Soul is a welcome change of pace. Though set in the world of Elantris, the story works perfectly well on its own. At under 200 pages, it’s a great way to sample Sanderson’s writing style. The story follows Shai, a thief and skilled Forger, who uses her magic to try and restore the soul of a dying emperor—and save her own life. Like all of Sanderson’s books, The Emperor’s Soul has a fascinating magic system, memorable characters, and a quick-moving, well-planned plot that will keep you hooked. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys Sanderson’s epic stories but wants something a little shorter.
