Ralph Fiennes has an idea of who should take on the role of Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, and his pick might surprise fans.
I’ll never forget Ralph Fiennes as the villain in the Harry Potter movies! He first appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire back in 2005, and he was absolutely chilling. It was amazing to see him act alongside such a talented cast, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and so many other incredible actors like Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, and Maggie Smith.
The original films are beloved, particularly by millennials, but HBO is creating a new TV series that will be a more faithful adaptation of the original story. The series features a largely new cast, including Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, Arabella Stanton, Nick Frost, John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Janet McTeer. However, Warwick Davis will return to reprise his role from the original films.
Although Voldemort/Tom Riddle is a key character, HBO hasn’t announced who will play him yet, probably because he doesn’t have a large role in the first book. However, Ralph Fiennes has some thoughts on who they should consider for the part.
When asked who he thought should play the famous villain next, Ralph Fiennes shared a popular fan suggestion. “Tilda Swinton’s name came up,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “and I think she’d be fantastic in the role.”
Ralph Fiennes jokingly offered some advice to the next actor playing Voldemort: be careful with the long robes and practice walking in them so you don’t trip! He also shared a story about how a difficult costume eventually became a funny running gag with the film crew.
I also wore tights on set. At first, they were a single piece with a built-in gusset, but it kept slipping down and becoming uncomfortable during filming. I asked for separate tights that fastened like a garter belt instead. I had fun playfully showing the stunt performers my garter belt by lifting my robes.
Costumes are important for fantasy roles, but Ralph Fiennes’ advice for the next Voldemort actor seems like a joke. Tilda Swinton would be a good fit, given her ability to transform into different characters. However, HBO hasn’t finalized the casting yet; according to CEO Casey Bloys, “I don’t even know who we’re casting!” and reports should be viewed with skepticism.
The first season of Harry Potter is slated to premiere on December 25, 2026.
