Ranking Superman’s First 10 Villains By Legacy

Superman first appeared in 1939 and essentially created the superhero genre. His amazing abilities, bright costume, and strong moral code had a huge impact on comics and popular culture worldwide. Because he was so powerful – able to lift buildings and fly faster than a bullet – ordinary criminals weren’t a real challenge. To give Superman worthy opponents, DC Comics started developing supervillains who could test him both physically and intellectually. Many of these villains became iconic characters in DC Comics, and their influence is still felt today, though some have faded into obscurity.

Whether it’s crazed scientists or alien overlords, Superman’s classic foes have defined the idea of a supervillain, and remain incredibly well-known today.

10) Titano

Titano is one of Superman’s oddest and lesser-known enemies. Imagine King Kong, but with the ability to fire Kryptonite lasers from his eyes! He first appeared in 1959 as Toto, a chimp launched into space. During his flight, Toto was exposed to radiation from Kryptonite and uranium meteors, causing him to grow to an enormous size and go on a destructive spree when he returned to Earth. Interestingly, Titano consistently seeks out Lois Lane, as she’s the only person who has ever shown him kindness. While incredibly strong and armed with deadly lasers, this giant ape remains a relatively minor threat in Superman’s adventures, rarely featuring in major storylines.

9) Prankster

Following the huge popularity of the Joker, DC Comics attempted to create a similar comedic villain in 1942 with the Prankster. However, he lacked the Joker’s captivating personality. Formerly a TV host whose show was cancelled, Oswald Loomis turned to elaborate and dangerous pranks as a distraction while robbing banks. Like the Joker, the Prankster uses various joke-themed gadgets when battling Superman. Despite this, he isn’t as humorous or frightening as the Joker, and doesn’t present a serious challenge to the Man of Steel. Today, the Prankster is generally seen as a minor, less-than-impressive villain.

8) Toyman

First appearing in 1943, Toyman (Winslow Schott) is a dangerous and unstable criminal who takes the pranks of others to a much more extreme level. Driven mad after his wife’s death and discovering his toy designs were used for weapons, he turned to a life of crime. A gifted inventor, Toyman builds elaborate, toy-themed weapons and robots – everything from exploding teddy bears to giant, building-sized robots – to help him commit crimes. He’s even created incredibly realistic androids that have fooled Superman. Over the years, several different people have used the name ‘Toyman,’ including a member of the Legion of Doom and a heroic, young inventor from Japan who works with Superman.

7) Ultra-Humanite

Ultra-Humanite debuted in DC Comics in 1939 and holds the distinction of being the first villain to reappear in the comics. Originally, he was portrayed as a bald, ambitious scientist intent on world domination, known for switching his brain into different bodies. After a long period of inactivity, the character was revamped in the 1980s. He returned as a much more visually striking figure – a brilliant but mad scientist who had transferred his brain into an albino gorilla, granting him immense strength. Despite being Superman’s first significant foe, Ultra-Humanite hasn’t been used much over the years, as Lex Luthor ultimately became recognized as the Man of Steel’s primary intellectual adversary.

6) Metallo

Superman is famously vulnerable to Kryptonite, and the villain Metallo has a heart made of it. First appearing in 1959, Metallo was originally a man rebuilt as a cyborg after a deadly accident, powered by Kryptonite. He blames Superman for his condition and uses his mechanical body and Kryptonite heart to constantly challenge the hero, often bringing him to the brink of defeat. Metallo is the second most well-known DC Comics villain to use Kryptonite against Superman, after Lex Luthor, and remains one of Superman’s most dangerous and persistent foes.

5) Mr. Mxyzptlk

In 1944, Superman faced his first enemy from another world. Mr. Mxyzptlk is an incredibly powerful, almost god-like being in DC Comics, but he’s more of a playful trickster than a dangerous villain. His pranks often escalate out of control, and Superman can only defeat him by getting the Imp to say or write his name backwards. Besides being one of the few villains Superman can’t simply overpower, Mr. Mxyzptlk inspired the creation of similar mischievous, Fifth-Dimensional foes for other heroes, such as Bat-Mite for Batman.

4) Bizarro

First appearing in 1958, Bizarro was one of the earliest examples of an evil Superman-like character. He’s essentially an imperfect copy of Superman, created either on another planet or through a failed cloning experiment. While Bizarro possesses Superman’s powers, he’s not as intelligent and often speaks in reverse. Instead of heat vision and freeze breath, he has ice vision and flame breath. Though he tries to do good, his tendency to think in opposites usually causes problems, making him a surprisingly relatable foe for Superman. Later stories expanded on Bizarro’s world, introducing an entire planet of imperfect duplicates living on the cube-shaped world of Htrae, with Bizarro acting as their protector.

3) General Zod

For many years, DC Comics portrayed Kryptonians—like Superman and Supergirl—as purely heroic figures. However, in 1961, they introduced General Dru-Zod, a villain who revealed a darker side to the Kryptonian race. Zod survived the destruction of Krypton by being banished to the Phantom Zone with his loyal followers. He possesses the same powers as Superman, but also has extensive combat experience. Zod’s compelling story and the themes he embodies have made him a central villain in two Superman films. He challenges Superman to grapple with his alien origins and demonstrates how his incredible power could be used for control instead of protection. While other Kryptonian villains have emerged over time, none have reached the same level of power and impact as Zod.

2) Brainiac

Brainiac, one of the universe’s most intelligent beings, first appeared as a villain for Superman in 1958. Hailing from the planet Colu, Brainiac is driven by an endless thirst for knowledge, leading him to steal entire cities, shrink them, and then destroy the planets they came from. His first appearance also introduced Kandor, a miniature version of Krypton containing some of the last surviving Kryptonians, including Supergirl’s parents. Interestingly, a descendant of Brainiac, known as Brainiac 5, later became a heroic member of the Legion of Superheroes. With his incredible intelligence and a planet-destroying spaceship, Brainiac remains a major threat not only to Superman but to the entire DC Universe.

1) Lex Luthor

If you ask most Superman fans who his biggest enemy is, they’ll instantly say Lex Luthor. He first appeared way back in 1940 and quickly became Superman’s perfect foil – a regular human who relies on his incredible intelligence to constantly try and take the Man of Steel down. At first, he was just a typical evil scientist, but over time, DC Comics has made him a much more complex character. Now he’s one of the richest people in the world, and he’s driven by his own pride to destroy Superman. You really see Luthor in almost every big Superman story, movie, or TV show because he’s such a core part of the legend. Superman embodies the best of humanity, even as an alien, but Luthor? He represents the worst parts of us all.
