Netflix is getting ready to stream the sci-fi film OASIS, a critically acclaimed movie that many consider to be underappreciated, starting next month.
According to What’s on Netflix, the sci-fi movie Ready Player One will be available on Netflix starting November 1st. Released in 2018, the film is based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel and tells the story of Wade Watts, a teenage orphan played by Tye Sheridan, who searches for clues to win control of a massive virtual reality world called the OASIS. The movie is set in a future version of 1945, where people are extremely nostalgic for the past, making it a great project for director Steven Spielberg, known for his popular films from that era.
Although Ready Player One earned over $600 million globally and received an Oscar nomination for its visual effects, it’s often considered an underappreciated film. This is likely due to the initial negative reaction to Ernest Cline’s book, which many criticized for its writing and overuse of pop culture. Interestingly, Steven Spielberg’s movie version, which made several changes to the book, was generally seen as a better experience.
Is Ready Player One Getting a Sequel?
Following the success of the movie Ready Player One, Ernest Cline released a sequel novel, Ready Player Two, which continues the story of Wade Watts as he uncovers a new virtual reality technology and embarks on another challenging quest. While Cline was writing the book, he consulted with Steven Spielberg, who was also considering a film sequel with Warner Bros. Five years later, Spielberg revealed that the movie sequel is still being explored. If it moves forward, Warner Bros. will need a new director, as Spielberg confirmed in March 2024 that he will only be a producer on Ready Player Two, not the director.
Ready Player One arrives on Netflix on Nov. 1.
