Ernest Cline’s 2011 science fiction novel, Ready Player One, tells a big story about a future where people’s lives are deeply connected to both technology and the pop culture of the 1980s. In 2018, director Steven Spielberg turned the novel into a visually stunning movie, featuring a talented cast including Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, and Ben Mendelsohn as the villain. The film was widely enjoyed as a thrilling and nostalgic adventure, showcasing a remarkable amount of recognizable content in a way only Spielberg could achieve.
With the film Ready Player One making over $607 million worldwide, it was a clear success with audiences. Many hoped this would lead to a movie based on the sequel novel, Ready Player Two, but that hasn’t happened yet. However, Entertainment Weekly reports that another Ready Player One adaptation is in development, though it might not be the sequel fans anticipated.
Ernest Cline’s popular novel, Ready Player One, is being turned into a graphic novel with the same name. Scott Peterson, known for his work on Batman: Gotham Adventures, is writing the adaptation, and Meredith Laxton (The Old Willis Place) is providing the artwork. The publisher, Ten Speed Graphic, recently shared a preview of the colorful pages on Instagram. While the preview is exclusive to their page, Entertainment Weekly has revealed the cover for a special edition available at Target (seen below). The standard graphic novel cover will feature different artwork.

Cline expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the team on the graphic novel, complimenting their work and noting how well the adaptation preserves the spirit and comedic elements of his original book. He stated:
Working with the team at Ten Speed Graphic has been wonderful, and I’m thrilled that Ready Player One is becoming a graphic novel. The story has always been about the excitement of escaping into another world, and Meredith Laxton’s incredible artwork truly enhances that adventure. This adaptation beautifully captures the spirit, humor, and excitement of Wade’s quest, offering even longtime fans something new to discover. I also believe it will introduce the magic of Ready Player One to a whole new audience. I’m eager for both existing fans and new readers to experience the OASIS in this fresh, dynamic format.
The upcoming adaptation will closely follow the original science fiction novel, though some adjustments will likely be made for the screen. Fans can expect to enjoy it when the special Target exclusive hardcover becomes available on October 6, 2026. Standard and deluxe hardcover editions will be released everywhere books are sold on March 2, 2027, and will each cost $35.
Steven Spielberg has confirmed a sequel to his film Ready Player One is being developed, based on the novel Ready Player Two. However, Spielberg won’t be directing it himself, though he will produce. Currently, there aren’t any firm plans for production or a release date. Tye Sheridan, who starred in the first film, has said he’s eager to return if a sequel happens. In the meantime, fans can revisit the world of the OASIS through the Ready Player One graphic novel.
