Few topics are as frightening as the possibility of a nuclear apocalypse, and that’s exactly what Kathryn Bigelow’s new film, A House of Dynamite, explores. It becomes available on Netflix this Friday.
This Oscar-winning director returns after eight years with a gripping political thriller. The film focuses on the intense thirty minutes following the discovery that a nuclear weapon of unknown origin is on its way to the United States, showing the events unfold through three different viewpoints.
As a film buff, I was really excited to see the cast list for this one – it’s packed with big names, including Idris Elba as the President! But Rebecca Ferguson, who I absolutely loved in Dune and Silo, truly shines. She plays a high-ranking officer in the White House Situation Room and delivers one of the most compelling performances in the movie.
So were there any details that especially surprised or alarmed her?
“Where do I even start?” she asked, then explained how quickly an undetected danger could escalate into a disaster.
What struck me most was realizing that the advisors in the Situation Room – and throughout the White House – actually had a better grasp of the facts and knew how to handle things better than the President himself.
The President doesn’t receive detailed, pre-event briefings. Instead, due to his busy schedule, he’s presented with potential options only when an emergency actually occurs, and he then makes the final decision. Importantly, the decision-making process is centralized – one person ultimately decides.
It’s hard to understand how nuclear weapons can ever be a solution. How can sending more nuclear weapons actually make the world safer? It just doesn’t make sense – it’s completely illogical and frankly, overwhelming to think about.
She noted that many viewers were particularly surprised by the sheer number of nuclear weapons that still exist, which she found to be a common reaction to the film.
She emphasized that people often underestimate the immense power held by a single individual. Specifically, one person alone can initiate a nuclear war, and the consequences of such an event would be devastating.

Ferguson’s fellow actor in the movie is Jason Clarke, who previously starred in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film Oppenheimer, which focused on the creation of the atomic bomb.
The first film looks at the beginning of the nuclear age, while the new one focuses on how it affects us today. Watching them together is a compelling, though somewhat depressing, experience.
Clarke enjoyed being in both films. She explained that while they both explore similar themes of big questions and immediate consequences, they were very distinct experiences as movies.
He added that working with two of the best directors of his life, alongside a fantastic cast, felt like a fitting culmination of his career. The project offered a fresh perspective on familiar themes, bringing things full circle.
Oppenheimer really shows the personal toll the events took on him. And what Kathryn does so well in this film is that she doesn’t just present that impact in the movie; she leaves it with the viewers to really feel and consider themselves.
It’s rare to experience something that truly stays with you. What are your honest thoughts? Not what we think, because we created this. Here it is, and it’s more than just an intellectual experience – it’s deeply moving. The reaction so far has been amazing.
