Rebecca Gayheart is giving a glimpse into her family.
Seven months after Eric Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis, his soon-to-be ex-wife spoke about how their family – including their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 – is navigating this difficult time.
Rebecca shared on the November 17th episode of the Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen podcast that their priority is to always support each other, no matter the circumstances. She emphasized that the person in question is family – someone’s father – and they are committed to handling the situation with respect and resilience, doing their best to navigate it together.
“It’s super complicated for me,” she continued. “We’ve been separated for eight years. The kids live with me 100 percent of the time. There’s been a lot of other stuff. I’m trying to stay optimistic, though, about it all.”
As someone who’s seen a lot of life changes, I can tell you that navigating tough times is something we all face. Recently, I made the decision to dismiss my divorce filing from Eric, and honestly, a big part of that was wanting to model resilience for our kids. I really believe in showing them that even when things are hard, you can work through it and come out stronger on the other side.
She confessed she wasn’t sure if she was handling things correctly. She was simply doing her best to be present and supportive, and hoped that, with time, she’d see if she was on the right track.
She understands that the former Grey’s Anatomy star’s heartbreaking diagnosis – a progressive and incurable disease affecting the brain and spinal cord – has been extremely challenging for both Billie and Georgia to come to terms with.
She explained that they’re good girls dealing with a difficult time. The fact that everything is public makes it even harder, as they’re struggling to process such complicated emotions and it’s leaving them confused.
Rebecca is learning to cope with her emotions and is also openly discussing the complexities of grief with her daughters.

The 53-year-old shared that they’re going through a period of personal growth, which they find very grounding. They hope to teach their children the importance of both supporting others and prioritizing self-care. They reflected that life is simply a series of moments, both joyful and difficult.
She went on to say that every day is unpredictable and should be cherished. She emphasized that this moment is all we have, not a practice run, and that whatever we’re experiencing right now is life itself.
Even though Eric and Rebecca are going through a tough time, they’re committed to supporting each other and presenting a united front.

Rebecca shared with TopMob News in April that she and her ex are very close friends and excellent coparents. She believes they’ve found a way to successfully maintain a family dynamic, which is positively impacting both their children and themselves.
She stressed that ending a relationship shouldn’t be seen as a failure. Instead, she views it as simply a chapter closing. She considers their 15-year partnership and two children a significant success, and that’s how she and her partner now see things, even though they are no longer together.

I was really shocked and saddened to hear that Eric Dane was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, back in April 2025. It’s such a tough disease, and I’m sending all my support to him and his family.
When I heard Dane share his news with People, it absolutely broke my heart, but even through everything, he talked about being thankful for his family. It just… it shows you what a genuinely incredible person he is, focusing on the love around him even while facing something so unbelievably tough. Honestly, it made me love him even more, if that’s even possible. It’s just… wow. He’s such an inspiration.

As a huge fan, I was so relieved to hear that Jacob Elordi isn’t slowing down, even with his recent health news. He actually told everyone in April 2025 that he’s still filming the last season of Euphoria, which is amazing! It means we’re still getting the show we love, and he’s clearly dedicated to finishing it strong.
I’ve been following Dane’s career for a while now, and it was really inspiring to hear him talk about how acting has actually helped him stay focused and mentally strong while dealing with his health challenges. His new series, Countdown, on Amazon MGM Studios came out over the summer, and he shared that getting to work on it has kept him ‘sharp’ through everything.
He told TopMob News in June 2025 that he generally feels good while at work. While there have been challenges, he maintains a positive attitude, and that’s what’s most important to him.

Two months after revealing he had been diagnosed, the former Grey’s Anatomy star openly discussed his experience, including the signs that first alerted him to a potential problem.
In June 2025, Dane shared with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America that he first noticed weakness in his right hand. He didn’t worry much about it at first, thinking it was just from texting too much or general tiredness. However, a few weeks later, he realized the weakness was getting worse.
After nearly a year of seeing doctors – including two hand specialists and two neurologists – Dane received a diagnosis of ALS.
The father of two said he’ll never forget seeing those three letters. They’re the first thing he thinks about when he wakes up, and it feels all too real – it’s not a dream.

He explained how the rare disease has impacted his physical health and shared his expectations for how it will progress in the future.
During his conversation with Sawyer, Dane explained that the left side of his body is still working, but the right side has completely stopped. He worries he may lose function in his left hand within a couple of months, which he described as a humbling realization.

After more than 20 years of marriage, Rebecca Gayheart has been supporting her husband, Dane, as he deals with a health issue. The couple had previously filed for divorce in 2018, but Rebecca requested the case be dismissed in March.
Dane told Sawyer he speaks with Rebecca daily. They’ve grown closer as friends and parents, and she’s his biggest supporter – someone he truly relies on.
According to Gayheart, she and Dane are the “best of friends.”
I’m so happy to see how well Brian and Shannen are doing! They recently told TopMob News that they’ve become amazing co-parents. It’s clear they’ve found a way to keep their family strong, and honestly, their kids – and both of them – are really thriving because of it. It’s just wonderful to see.

Dane has been celebrating important moments with his daughters, Billie and Georgia, but he’s also shared that he struggles with how his ALS impacts his family.
The actor shared during an interview with GMA that he’s struggling with the possibility of his daughters experiencing a similar loss to his own – losing a father at a young age. His father died by suicide when he was a boy, and now he fears being separated from his daughters while they are still young. Ultimately, he just wants to be with his family and continue working when possible.

Dane was scheduled to present at the 2025 Emmys with his Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Jesse Williams, on September 14th, but he couldn’t make it. He later revealed that he had to miss the show due to a hospital stay a few weeks prior.
In an interview with The Washington Post on October 2nd, he revealed he was hospitalized getting stitches while others were at the Emmys, explaining, “ALS is a terrible disease.”
“I was a really upset about it,” Dane added. “But you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

In September 2025, Dane met with doctors and people from the I Am ALS organization. He also spoke with California Congressman Eric Swalwell about getting more federal money for research into ALS, a neurological disease that currently has no cure.
In a TikTok video shared by Representative Swalwell on September 29th, Dane said, “I want to experience all of life’s milestones.” He explained he has two daughters and hopes to see them graduate college, get married, and perhaps even have children of their own.
