Recently, many beloved TV shows and franchises have returned with reboots or revivals, and we can expect even more. Along with this trend, animated series from the 1990s are gaining popularity again. When discussing shows that were innovative for their time, ReBoot stands out. As the first TV series entirely created with computer animation, it pioneered the use of CGI and inspired many others. Now, one of the creators has discussed the possibility of bringing the show back and explained what happened with a previous attempt.
The show ReBoot followed Bob and Dot as they fought viruses, including the villain Megabyte, in the digital world of Mainframe. Michael Benyaer originally played Bob, and recently spoke with ComicBook about his new role as Ra’s Al Ghul in Bat-Fam. Of course, we also had to ask him about ReBoot! Benyaer was excited to reprise his role and bring the show back, particularly considering how much technology has advanced since the original aired.
When asked about how his character, Bob, would fit in with the ‘Bat-Fam’ universe, Benyaer explained that Bob would be excited and immediately jump in. He added that the original ‘ReBoot’ series was groundbreaking for its time, being the first fully computer-animated show, which premiered around 1994 or 1995 – even before ‘Toy Story’. He also mentioned that ‘ReBoot’ itself received a reboot in recent years, about ten years ago.
Benyaer explained that the producers kept the plot of the episode secret, but had him work with familiar characters from the show’s past. He noted that many fans disliked the updated version, which he understood, and believes the creators were attempting a mix of live-action and computer-generated imagery.
Benyaer acknowledged potential budget constraints, but emphasized how common computers and the internet have become. He believes now is a great time to revisit the project, noting that video games are incredibly realistic these days and the visual effects would be stunning. He also expressed his continued interest in voicing the character Bob.
The first two seasons of ReBoot aired before Disney bought ABC and cancelled the show. However, a third season was produced in Canada and later broadcast in the US on Cartoon Network. In the 2000s, several ReBoot TV movies were also released, airing in multiple parts on Cartoon Network.
In 2018, a new version of ReBoot called ReBoot: The Guardian Code appeared on Netflix. This series was a fresh take on the original, centering on four teenagers who discover they’re protectors of cyberspace. They fight computer viruses and the villain, The Sourcerer, who has taken Megabyte captive. However, the show wasn’t very popular, and despite combining live action with the classic CGI style, it failed to attract a large audience.
It’s possible a reboot could recapture the magic of the original show while also using today’s technology and storytelling techniques, but only time will tell if it succeeds.
