The remastered version of Red Dead Redemption is now available, but Xbox players are experiencing issues with the promised free upgrade. Red Dead Redemption is a landmark game from Rockstar, known for its captivating story, memorable characters, and immersive open world – a world that felt very different from their Grand Theft Auto series. It was followed by an even more popular prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, which surpassed the original in many ways. However, because Red Dead Redemption 2 was so successful, many players haven’t had a chance to experience the first game. Fortunately, Rockstar has made the original Red Dead Redemption widely available through recent re-releases.
In 2023, Rockstar brought back Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, and then on PC in 2024. However, the PS4 and Switch versions weren’t fully optimized—the PS4 version, even on a PS5, was capped at 1080p. While a 60 FPS update eventually arrived, some players felt it wasn’t enough given the game’s price. Now, Red Dead Redemption is available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2, and there’s also a brand new mobile version you can play through Netflix.
Red Dead Redemption Remaster Error Prevents Players From Getting Free Xbox Upgrade

Players who own Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One are eligible for a free upgrade to the new version on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. However, many Xbox players are reporting they aren’t seeing the upgrade option in their accounts. While some have been trying to figure out if there’s a hidden requirement in Rockstar’s announcement, it appears to be a simple error – a frustrating one, but not due to any catch in the terms.
So, it looks like there was a mistake on the Rockstar support page! If you already own the digital version of Red Dead Redemption on Xbox 360 or Xbox One, you’re supposed to get the updated version for free. Rockstar is working with Microsoft to fix the issue so that upgrade shows up for everyone. They’re saying if you buy it again right now, you might not be able to get a refund, so it’s best to hold off. They don’t know exactly when it’ll be fixed, but hopefully it’s sorted out this week – maybe even sooner!
We’re currently looking into a problem that’s preventing Xbox players from upgrading their digital copy of Red Dead Redemption from the Xbox 360 version to the version for Xbox Series X|S. We’re working with Microsoft to fix it, and we appreciate your understanding.

Okay, so I finally got to play the Red Dead Redemption remaster, and wow, the detail is seriously impressive – it’s like getting the PC version from last year on my console! They’ve also done some cool stuff with the hardware. I’m playing on the Switch 2, and this mouse mode is a game-changer for aiming with the Joy-Cons – way more precise. And the best part? I could bring over my old save file, which automatically unlocked all my achievements and trophies from the original game. It’s awesome not having to start from scratch!
Are you going to play the Red Dead Redemption remaster? Let me know in the comments!
