Reese Witherspoon Reflects on Leaving an Abusive Relationship

Reese Witherspoon has lived and she’s learned.

The Morning Show actress recently shared what it was like after leaving a difficult, abusive relationship when she was very young. She explained that it left her feeling insecure and lacking confidence, even if she didn’t always appear that way to others.

Reese recently shared on The New York Times’ podcast, The Interview, that while she was always professional and reliable in her career, she lacked emotional maturity earlier in life. She explained that this led to unhealthy relationships, and she often didn’t recognize the problematic patterns within them.

Even after leaving the harmful relationship, Reese struggled with a damaged self-image.

It took me some time to recover,” the 49-year-old explained. “I felt drained because I’d started to believe all the negative things someone said about me. I had to change the way I thought about things.”

Since her divorce, Reese has been prioritizing her own well-being and recovery while continuing to live her life publicly. She shares her 26-year-old daughter Ava and 21-year-old son Deacon with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, and her 13-year-old son Tennessee with ex-husband Jim Toth.

She told Lulu Garcia-Navarro that becoming the person she is today was a long journey, and that being in the public eye is very difficult.

She expressed sympathy for public figures who manage to keep some part of their lives private. She explained that it’s incredibly difficult to do so now, as people often treat them like objects rather than individuals, constantly photographing them as if they were animals on display instead of people simply living their lives with their families or enjoying a private moment.

Reese Witherspoon recently shared more about her past, recalling how escaping a harmful relationship – one that included emotional and verbal abuse – helped her achieve her goals. She first spoke about this experience seven years ago.

She explained to Oprah Winfrey in the March 2018 issue of *O, The Oprah Magazine* that a boundary she set was violated, which caused a significant shift in her thinking. “I just couldn’t continue like that,” she said, adding that the experience was deeply impactful, especially because she was so young at the time.

Reese shared that standing up for herself was deeply transformative, changing her at a fundamental level. It’s why she now confidently embraces her ambition – because someone once attempted to suppress it.

Reese Witherspoon was born Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon in New Orleans in 1976. “Reese” is her mother Betty’s original family name.

She believes she is related to John Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but this connection hasn’t been officially confirmed by experts at the Society of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Reese Witherspoon spent four years of her childhood living in Wiesbaden, Germany, because her father, Dr. John Draper Witherspoon, was a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve.

As a child, she was a highly motivated and avid reader, earning the nickname “Little Miss Type A” from her parents. Years later, she used a variation of this nickname for her production company, Type A. However, in a 2005 interview with *Interview* magazine, she explained the name actually came from a family joke about her understanding complex medical concepts-like the difference between Type A and Type B personalities-at the age of seven. She admitted she would have preferred a different name, like “Dogfood Films” or “Fork,” feeling the “Type A” label followed her throughout her life.

She started her acting career at age seven, appearing in commercials for a florist. This experience motivated her to begin taking acting classes.

In 1991, she went to an open audition for the movie *The Man in the Moon*, hoping for a small part. Surprisingly, she was cast as the main character, Dani Trant-a 14-year-old girl experiencing first love with her 17-year-old neighbor. This role, her first in a film, earned her a nomination for Best Young Actress at the Young Artist Awards that year.

Although she started acting at just 14, she was a good student and got into Stanford University to study English. However, she left after one year to focus on her growing career as an actress.

Reese Witherspoon first met her future husband, Ryan Phillippe, at her 21st birthday party in 1997. A friend brought him as a guest, and Reese playfully told him at the end of the night that she considered him her birthday gift, as she shared with *People* magazine in 2002.

Ryan Phillippe proposed to his girlfriend in December 1998 with a special breakfast of waffles, strawberries, and cream, shortly after filming the popular movie *Cruel Intentions* in 1999. They married on June 5, 1999, in Charleston, South Carolina, and welcomed their daughter, Ava, three months later.

On September 29, 2001, Reese Witherspoon hosted the first episode of *Saturday Night Live* following the September 11th attacks. Speaking with Katie Couric in 2015, she described it as a challenging time for New York City, but expressed pride in being part of the show alongside firefighters, Paul Simon, and Lorne Michaels. She praised Michaels for successfully bringing the show back and helping the country find some humor again.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! When Reese landed the lead in Mira Nair’s *Vanity Fair*, Mira actually *joked* that Reese should gain weight – even suggesting she get pregnant! And then, get this, Reese actually *did* announce she was pregnant while filming! They had to be SO careful with the costumes to hide her bump, it was crazy! I was following every detail, and it was just…amazing. She’s perfect!

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s son, Deacon, was born in October 2003. He’s named after Deacon Phillippe, a Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher who was a relative of Ryan Phillippe.

Reese Witherspoon received major recognition for her role as June Cash in *Walk the Line*. She won five prestigious awards – an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Critics’ Choice Award, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award – all for that single performance, placing her among a select group of actresses who have achieved this feat.

14. She and Phillippe split in 2006 after seven years of marriage.

Reese Witherspoon decided to become a movie producer because she was frustrated with the poor quality of some scripts she received. She explained to Chelsea Handler in 2017 that if so many actresses were competing for such a weak role, she needed to create her own opportunities and ensure women’s talents were used in worthwhile projects.

Following her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon met talent agent Jim Toth at a party in early 2010. She recalled to *Elle* magazine in 2012 that a heavily intoxicated man was aggressively pursuing her and causing a scene. “He was yelling at me, acting like a fool, and kept saying, ‘You don’t know me!'” Witherspoon explained. “I told him I didn’t, and then Jim stepped in, apologized for the man’s behavior, and explained he was going through a breakup. Jim was a true friend and quickly diffused the situation, which really showed his kind character.”

The couple got married at her ranch in Ojai, California, in March 2011 and had a son, Tennessee, in September 2012.

In 2013, police in Atlanta stopped Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon because Toth was driving erratically, changing lanes frequently. As officers arrested Toth for driving under the influence, Witherspoon reportedly became upset and confrontational, allegedly asking the officers if they knew who she was. When they said it didn’t matter, she supposedly replied that they would soon find out. She was then arrested for disturbing the peace and later pleaded no contest to a charge of obstructing the officers.

Due to the current legal proceedings, I’m unable to discuss the reports circulating right now. However, I want to acknowledge that I had too much to drink and I’m truly ashamed of what I said. While it was a frightening experience and I was worried about my husband, that doesn’t excuse my actions. I was disrespectful to the officer, who was simply doing their job, and my words don’t represent my true character. I have great respect for the police and sincerely apologize for my behavior.

In a 2002 interview with *People* magazine, Reese Witherspoon playfully confessed she was a huge fan of Tupperware, even admitting she had to stop and shop whenever she passed a Hold Everything store. Unfortunately, those stores closed in 2006.

From 2007 to 2011, Tamera Witherspoon was the voice of the Playhouse Disney programming block on the Disney Channel. She provided voiceovers for the block’s promotional materials, short segments between shows, and commercials, all aimed at children aged 3 to 8.

In 2013, she collaborated with Michael Bublé on his album *To Be Loved*, providing vocals for a cover of the classic Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra duet, “Somethin’ Stupid.”

Reese Witherspoon started her lifestyle brand, Draper James, in 2015, naming it after her grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon. The brand features clothing, accessories, and home goods inspired by the style of the American South, and its first physical store opened in Nashville that fall.

Her debut book, *Whiskey in a Teacup*, which shares lifestyle advice inspired by her Southern roots, came out on September 18, 2018. She’s also a passionate reader and hosts a book club through her Instagram account.

I’ve been a Reese Witherspoon fan for ages, and it’s wild to think about some of the roles she *didn’t* take! Apparently, she passed on being in *Scream* and *Urban Legend*, and she even auditioned for *Romeo + Juliet* but Claire Danes ultimately got the part. I was especially surprised to learn she had to leave Pixar’s *Brave* – she just couldn’t quite nail the Scottish accent needed for Merida, which is totally understandable, accents are hard!

24. She kept most of Elle Woods’ iconic wardrobe from the Legally Blonde franchise.

Okay, seriously, Reese Witherspoon is a total hero. When the news about Harvey Weinstein broke, she didn’t just talk about it – she *did* something. I mean, she immediately started texting and emailing everyone she knew in Hollywood, getting all the women connected. She basically rallied the troops! She got us all in one room and helped us turn our outrage and conversations into a real plan. And get this – she even found the amazing designer who created the Time’s Up logo and those black pins everyone wore at the Golden Globes in 2018? It was all her! She’s just incredible, honestly. I’m completely obsessed with how proactive and powerful she was.
