Even in 2026, romantic comedies starring two Black actors are still surprisingly uncommon in major movie theaters, particularly those produced by large Hollywood studios.
The new film, You, Me and Tuscany, is a perfect example of a charming escape. It features Halle Bailey, known for The Little Mermaid, as Anna, a driven young chef who spontaneously travels to Tuscany. Her trip begins after a brief encounter with an Italian man who casually mentioned she could stay at his villa if she ever visited Italy.
Okay, so the premise is delightfully chaotic. A woman unexpectedly ends up living in a man’s empty house, and when his rather unusual family discovers her, she does the only logical thing – pretends to be his fiancée! You can imagine the comedy that ensues. And, of course, there’s a simmering attraction between her and the Italian’s adopted brother, Michael – played by the incredibly charming Regé-Jean Page, adding another layer of delightful complication to the whole thing.
This movie feels like a classic, lighthearted romantic comedy – full of fun and a bit of silliness – and the two lead actors told TopMob that it was crucial for a film like this to star Black leads.
Bridgerton alum Regé-Jean Page shared in a recent interview that he believes it’s important to portray characters living relatable, ambitious, and everyday lives.
“It’s amazing to see genuine stories and real life reflected on screen,” Bailey said. “I’m so thankful to be involved in a romantic comedy with two Black leads that people can see in theaters. It feels significant, and I really hope the movie connects with audiences and leaves a lasting impression.”

Page explained that the film’s impact comes from presenting a hopeful vision, suggesting that the lifestyle shown is achievable for everyone.
He explained that it’s important to demonstrate to everyone that they deserve and are capable of living life to the fullest, embracing all it has to offer.
No matter who you are, you can travel anywhere and create a chosen family, even finding love in beautiful places like a vineyard. Sharing those experiences – those pictures – is all it takes to show that it’s possible.
Director Kat Coiro said the casting for Michael and Anna was incredibly stressful because Page and Bailey were the only two actors they seriously considered for the parts. They didn’t have any other good options if things hadn’t worked out with them.
She explained to TopMob that unlike many films which rely on extensive casting lists, their decision was simple: it was always going to be Halle and Regé, and that was final.

As a movie fan, I always get excited about new on-screen pairings, and Will Packer – the guy behind films like Ride Along and Girls Trip – said it was clear from the start that these two actors had amazing chemistry. He quickly realized they just really clicked together when filming.
He admitted that both actors are very attractive, which is a benefit. More importantly, they’re dedicated and talented, and you could feel their connection and timing from the very first read-through of the script. Chemistry between the leads is all about finding that natural rhythm.
He explained that, in his opinion, the most successful romantic comedies feature two main characters who balance each other out – each bringing something unique that the other lacks. He believes this dynamic is present in the film they’re discussing.
Coiro explained that the two characters are complete opposites. Anna is spontaneous and lives in the moment, creating a bit of delightful chaos. Michael, on the other hand, is very stable, dedicated, and perhaps a little reserved. Their contrasting personalities ultimately lead to positive changes in each other’s lives.

Page was particularly excited about the project because it would let audiences experience the story from Halle Bailey’s perspective, all while using familiar and well-loved romantic comedy elements.
He described Halle as captivating, radiant, and genuinely joyful. He felt she was incredibly likable, a quality he considered uncommon and precious. He hoped viewers would connect with her story, as he believed it resonated with everyone.
We drew a lot of inspiration from the classic film Roman Holiday, which tells the story of a woman who bravely decides to prioritize her own happiness. Feeling trapped in a monotonous life, she ventures out and finds a world of possibility, where she experiences romance and the freedom to live life as she chooses.
That’s what makes a great romantic comedy, in my opinion. The idea of creating that feeling with Halle in beautiful Tuscany – sunshine, vineyards, driving through the hills in a convertible – it’s just perfect!
You, Me and Tuscany is released in UK cinemas on Friday 10 April.
