Reported Disney World Monorail Fire Forces System Shutdown Near Grand Floridian

A fire on one of the Disney World monorails early Sunday morning caused the entire system to shut down. Witnesses saw smoke coming from Monorail Silver near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.

I just saw a video of the fire that broke out on the Disney World Monorail this morning! It happened right in front of the Grand Floridian, and it’s pretty crazy to see.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m., triggering an emergency response and sparking concerns about Disney’s older transportation system, which has experienced ongoing mechanical problems.

Based on what people are posting online, it looks like there was an electrical fire on the Silver train, somewhere between the cars. Although Disney hasn’t released many details yet, photos and videos clearly show something caught fire and produced smoke, leading them to temporarily stop the train.

No injuries have been confirmed at this time.

“CHRIS in the Concierge Lounge” posted photos with the following statement.

He said he never expected to see a monorail catch fire during his morning run. He noticed a lot of smoke smelling like burning wires coming from between the cars, but by the time he went back with his phone to take a picture, the fire was already out.

Marlene Borrego reported a small fire on the monorail near the Grand Floridian around 9:30 this morning.

The photos show the Monorail Silver stopped, with black smoke coming from where two cars connect.

Disney Shuts Down Entire Monorail System

As soon as smoke was seen, Disney immediately stopped all monorails at Walt Disney World. This included all lines – the Resort Line, Express Line, and the EPCOT line – as part of Disney’s usual safety procedures for smoke or possible electrical problems.

Disney hasn’t commented on the situation yet, but people are asking if any passengers were on board, what caused the problem, how much damage occurred, and when the service will be working again.

As of publication, no official update has been provided.

Why This Matters

The monorail is a classic part of the Disney World experience, but it’s also getting old. Many of the trains are over 30 years old, and the recent fire—happening just before a busy holiday week—is raising more and more worries about its reliability.

Problems have included doors opening while the ride is in motion, air conditioning breaking down, mechanical failures, and considerable delays during busy morning hours.

Visitors generally believe the monorail is a very safe and dependable way to get around the resort. However, that trust can quickly disappear when smoke starts coming from the cars as it travels right under hotel balconies.

Today’s issue really brings to light what Disney fans have been saying for a long time: Disney needs to replace the entire monorail system, not just make cosmetic improvements.

Paint jobs fade. Electrical fires don’t.

Final Thoughts

Disney World’s monorail experienced a fire this weekend, but it seems crews put it out quickly. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The sight of smoke coming from the monorail near the luxury resort is sure to bring up familiar concerns about safety, upkeep, and how Disney chooses to spend its money.
