Resident Evil Requiem Not Making Leon the Main Character Makes Perfect Sense

Initially, it was assumed that Leon would be the main character or one of the leads in Resident Evil 9. However, contrary to expectations, a new character named Grace Ashcroft has been chosen as the protagonist. While Leon could have been considered for the role, the developers opted instead for a character linked to an existing franchise figure, explaining why Grace is taking on this role rather than Leon. This change makes sense if you’re familiar with the series and Leon’s previous roles. At this stage in his career, Leon has become so accustomed to dealing with biohazards and outbreaks that he no longer experiences fear in these situations.

In earlier Resident Evil games like 2 and 4, Leon was a more fitting protagonist due to his integration into the horror genre. However, in Resident Evil 6, some players might have felt that both Leon’s and Chris’ parts of the campaign veered towards a standard action game, rather than maintaining the horror aspect. This is not to say that RE6 doesn’t have its flaws, but it does highlight how experienced protagonists can diminish the fear factor for the player. Given these observations, it’s plausible that Leon may not be ideal as the main character in Resident Evil Requiem, and would instead excel in a supporting role.

Making Grace the Protagonist Instead of Leon

Grace Ashcroft isn’t completely unfamiliar with this series since she’s actually Alyssa Ashcroft’s daughter from the Resident Evil Outbreak series. Now grown up and employed by the FBI, it’s the peculiar aspects surrounding her mother’s demise that lead to her being assigned to investigate the Wrenwood Hotel – and potentially other locations yet unnamed. Unlike Leon or Alyssa, Grace hasn’t been directly involved in an outbreak herself. However, being with the FBI suggests she has some training that could help her handle dangerous situations more effectively compared to Ethan Winters, who had no combat training whatsoever.

In our scenario, we have a main character named Grace who is well-suited for leading a Resident Evil game due to her balanced background. She has some understanding of outbreaks from both her professional life and her mother’s past, as well as familiarity with weapons. However, she lacks direct field experience with these outbreaks. Moreover, there’s a significant emotional connection for Grace with the Wrenwood Hotel, given her mom’s tragic death there. This sets up an opportunity for us to share her fear and uncertainty as we journey through the game together. If Leon were our protagonist, his familiarity with these situations would diminish the horror, as he is accustomed to such events.
