Exciting news for Resident Evil fans! A new game was revealed at Summer Game Fest, and alongside it comes a long-awaited remake of the classic, and often overlooked, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.
The new Resident Evil Veronica game is set to launch in 2027, likely by the end of March to align with the company’s financial year. Its reveal was surprisingly simple – unlike previous trailers that featured elaborate action sequences, it begins with Claire Redfield calmly arriving at the building where her brother, Chris, is staying.
A friendly landlady led her up to his apartment, which was a mess. Papers were scattered around, and a camera with a long lens, a walkie-talkie, and a voice recorder sat on a table next to a full ashtray. A box of fancy pastries suggested he enjoyed something sweet. The landlady mentioned she’d cleaned the apartment just a week before, meaning Chris had been there briefly and left in a rush. “It’s like a boulder rolled through here,” she commented, hinting at something more to come.
Claire goes to make coffee and is surprised by a knock at the door. When she opens it, she’s immediately threatened with a knife by members of a special forces unit – the same group responsible for the destruction of Raccoon City. They take her captive and transport her to Rockfort Island, where another outbreak occurs, turning the inhabitants into zombies. The story then unfolds, revealing the powerful Ashford family and the destiny of Alexander, the 6th Earl, among other mysteries.
However, the situation isn’t quite as simple as it seems. The website describes this as a “reimagined storyline,” and there’s the noticeable appearance of a gas-mask-wearing figure who looks like Hunk. He wasn’t present in the original Code: Veronica game. But players of The Darkside Chronicles, which included a shorter retelling called Game of Oblivion, might recall a report mentioning Hunk’s visit to Rockfort Island.
He mentioned carrying a large capsule containing a dangerous biological weapon, kept frozen as Alfred instructed. However, he wondered why his skilled team was assigned to what seemed like a regular container, and expressed worry about their safety if the contents were hazardous. It’s clear what—or who—is inside.
The team might include this element in the new game, or it could simply inspire them to give the character Hunk a more significant part. He recently reappeared in Resident Evil Requiem with a quick, enjoyable battle, which makes fans speculate about future plans for his story. However, he might just be a surprise addition without much further development, especially if rumors are true that Albert Wesker and the HCF will have expanded roles and more story scenes.
This definitely brings up some new mysteries. How did Umbrella find out Claire would be at that location? Were they already watching the area, hoping to catch Chris, and just happened to succeed? Or did someone close to him betray him? The original story showed Chris was already being monitored. And what about the walkie-talkie? Who has he been talking to?

This scene at least clarifies why Claire traveled to Paris. It’s still unclear how she knew Chris was there, but she also emailed Leon asking for help finding her brother. Perhaps in a future version of the story, she left a clue at his place before she was taken. It’s also possible Umbrella deliberately revealed information to draw him out of hiding. Whatever happened, these events could significantly change the direction of Chris’s storyline.
The marketing for this game only features Claire Redfield, unlike the previous installment which showed both Claire and Chris. This might suggest Claire is the main character, or it could mean the developers are saving the reveal of Chris’s appearance for later. It’s a similar strategy to how Leon Kennedy wasn’t officially confirmed until close to the release of his game, even though he later became a key part of the promotional materials.
One intriguing detail from the trailer shows a character in a red coat and white gloves, carrying what appears to be a pocket watch as they descend the stairs. It strongly suggests a new design for Alfred Ashford. And it’s a good one – it keeps the character’s classic colors and formal style, but gives it a more updated and functional feel.
We see some recognizable places, but they’ve been completely redone with amazing detail. A hooded figure turns out to be Steve Burnside, another prisoner Claire meets who sometimes helps her out. Is this a new, improved version of a character we already know? Probably. But at least the Gold Lugers – important to the story – look fantastic.
One of the most misleading parts of the trailer is when Claire explores the apartment building from a first-person viewpoint. This might lead players to believe, especially after playing Requiem, that the remake will let you switch between first and third-person perspectives. However, considering that rumors about this remake started two years ago, and the Requiem team said creating dual perspectives is like making two games at once, it’s probably not the case. Previous Resident Evil remakes have consistently used the over-the-shoulder view, and Veronica will likely do the same, potentially using first-person for cutscenes only.

Beyond the updated graphics and beginning, the biggest shift is the title itself. Why simply Veronica, instead of Code: Veronica like the original game? This name choice, along with story elements, might suggest the remake is taking inspiration from Darkside Chronicles, where the game refers to it as “the Veronica virus.” It’s still unclear if other changes will be included, such as Claire assisting Chris in a key fight, or Chris encountering Steve.
According to reports from leaker Dusk Golem, the development team probably won’t be removing any content. This is strange, though, because it seems the raid on the Umbrella Paris facility has been cut (unless Claire managed to escape and then went to look for Chris). It’s possible they meant that no existing gameplay sections have been removed, and they’re making room for new content. It’s also possible that changes to the story, as seen in previous remakes, will connect, even if those games, like the fourth one, happen later in the timeline.
Okay, so I’m super excited – Resident Evil Veronica is finally getting a remake! It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and even the Switch 2, which is awesome. From what I’ve seen, it looks absolutely incredible, and the fact that they aren’t holding back for older consoles means they can really push the graphics and gameplay. Will it be a legendary remake that sets a new standard for the series? We’ll have to wait and see, but honestly, I’m just thrilled to be playing as Claire again!
