Return of X-Men ’97’s Best Character Officially Addressed After Post-Credits Tease

The new season of X-Men ’97 will involve a lot of time travel as different teams of X-Men find themselves lost in various time periods. The overarching story will center around the powerful villain, Apocalypse. While the season will introduce new characters, it will also continue storylines from the first season, especially concerning the fate of what many fans consider the show’s best character – a question that was left hanging after the season 1 credits.

As a longtime X-Men fan, I was really affected by Gambit’s sacrifice in season one to save Genosha, and it sounds like his death is going to be a major theme in the new season. The executive producer, Larry Houston, said it specifically ‘looms greatly’ over everything, but especially for Rogue, who’s still grieving. Apparently, Gambit’s been a cornerstone of the X-Men since he first appeared in the comics back in 1990, and he was important in the animated series too. Houston mentioned they know fans are eager to see how they address everything that happened last season, and I definitely count myself among those fans!

X-Men ’97’s Post Credits Scene Sets Up A Major Story From The Comics

Beyond discussing the consequences of Gambit’s death, the show’s executive producers also talked about the post-credits scene from season one. That scene depicts Apocalypse standing amidst the destroyed island of Genosha, holding a playing card, and ominously stating, “So much pain, my children. So much…death.”

That scene strongly suggests Gambit might follow the comic book storyline and become Apocalypse’s horseman, Death. When asked directly, Julia didn’t confirm this, but acknowledged fans are noticing hints and she sees that as a good sign. She hinted they weren’t going to confirm anything specific just yet.

Eric finished with a final piece of advice: “If you want to know where to go, pay attention to the clues.”

Episode director Chase Conley shared that the show will draw from popular comic book storylines, but with a unique twist (according to Entertainment Weekly). He explained that the animated series has a history of reimagining source material, keeping viewers guessing. Conley also emphasized that the writers are meticulous, carefully choosing every word to create a thoughtful and engaging experience.

X-Men ’97 hits Disney+ on July 1, 2026.
