Around a month before Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, director Rian Johnson agreed to create a brand new Star Wars trilogy with Lucasfilm. However, The Last Jedi proved to be a very controversial film, Johnson found success with the Knives Out movies, and his Star Wars project stalled. While Johnson has consistently said he’d be open to returning to the Star Wars universe over the last eight years, many fans began to believe his trilogy would join the long list of Star Wars films that were announced but never made. Recent news now seems to confirm those fears.
According to a recent profile in The Hollywood Reporter, plans for the Star Wars trilogy announced by Rian Johnson are no longer moving forward. Instead of starting a new Star Wars series, Johnson’s next film, following Wake Up Dead Man this year, will be a suspenseful, 1970s-style thriller.
I was really hoping for some news about a potential new Star Wars trilogy in that interview with Johnson, but he didn’t actually say anything specific about it. He did share how much Star Wars means to him personally, saying it’s deeply ingrained in who he is and how he sees the world, which was nice to hear, but left me wanting more!
The Saga of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Should Be Over

Hearing that Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy is pretty much off the table is… complicated, honestly. As someone who really loved The Last Jedi and thought he brought a fresh perspective to Star Wars, I’m definitely bummed. It felt like he was taking the franchise in a bold, new direction. But I get that it was divisive. A lot of people just didn’t connect with his choices, and I can see how they’d be happy to see him step away. For some, The Last Jedi was where things started to go wrong with the Disney sequels, ultimately leading to the disappointing ending we got with The Rise of Skywalker. It’s just a tough situation all around.
Honestly, while a part of me still hoped Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy would happen someday, this news doesn’t really shock me. I had a feeling things weren’t moving forward, especially after Star Wars Celebration Japan. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, announced a bunch of new movies they’re developing, and Johnson’s name wasn’t among them. They’re working with directors like James Mangold and Taika Waititi, and it feels pretty clear Lucasfilm has moved on. It’s true that many of these new projects don’t have release dates yet, but if Johnson’s trilogy was still a possibility, I think Kennedy would have at least mentioned it alongside the others.
While The Last Jedi divided fans, Rian Johnson should be commended for trying something fresh and bold with Star Wars. The franchise had often relied too much on familiar elements from the past, which hindered its growth. Given that Johnson’s film (which unusually didn’t suffer from production problems) took a unique approach to the Skywalker story, it would have been fascinating to see him create a completely new Star Wars tale with original characters. People might have embraced his vision more easily if it hadn’t been so closely tied to established heroes like Luke Skywalker.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always appreciated Rian Johnson’s knack for taking familiar genres and flipping them on their head – he brings something genuinely new to the table. Honestly, I think that’s exactly what Star Wars needs right now as it heads into a new phase. It’s a shame Lucasfilm decided not to move forward with his planned trilogy, especially when they’ve got The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter coming up – projects clearly aimed at revitalizing the brand in theaters. I’m really hoping those films do well, because that could open the door for more diverse Star Wars stories. Kathleen Kennedy seems to want to let filmmakers tell personal, standalone stories, which is a great idea. Let’s just hope she makes the right choices so we don’t end up forever wondering ‘what if’ about Johnson’s trilogy – it had so much potential.
