Well, I see the money-changers are at it again, cookin’ up a new kind of specie that ain’t gold nor silver, but something called “RLUSD.” Sounds like a noise a fella makes after a big meal, but they tell me it’s a stablecoin, which I reckon means it’s supposed to be as steady as a church pew, though my experience says different.
This here enterprise blockchain outfit, Ripple, has partnered up with some big financial guns over in Japan, the SBI VC Trade, and they aim to unleash this RLUSD on the unsuspecting public come 2026. The head honcho of the exchange, a Mr. Kondo, called it a “major step.” That’s corporate talk for “hold onto your hats, and probably your wallets.”
The Great RLUSD Inflation 🎈
Now, according to the number-crunchers at CoinGecko, this new-fangled money has already ballooned to a market cap of $667 million since it popped into existence last December. Just last week, Ripple went and minted another 24 million tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, which is a fancy way of saying they printed a whole mess of it without so much as a printing press.
It’s already been used in some high-falutin’ IPO for a place called Bullish, and they’re talkin’ about using it for credit facilities. Why, it’s enough to make a man long for the simple days of a gold doubloon.
Japan’s Great Stablecoin Rush 🏃♂️💨
Seems the whole world’s gone mad for these stablecoins, and Japan is rushin’ to join the party. Not to be outdone, Ripple’s main competitor, Circle, is also bringin’ its own version of pretend-money to Japan, partnerin’ with the very same SBI VC.
Even the government regulators have given a nod to a local firm to issue a coin pegged to the yen. It’s a regular carnival of currency over there!
Ripple’s vice president of these stablecoins, a Mr. Jack McDonald, says he hopes RLUSD will set a new “benchmark.” I suppose that’s true. It benchmarks just how far a fella will go to avoid carryin’ a heavy pocket of real coin. It’s a marvel of modern convenience and a monument to human confoundment, all rolled into one. 🙃
