Rob Reiner & Michele Singer Reiner’s Cause of Death Revealed

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s causes of death have been revealed.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner determined that the couple died from multiple cuts or stab wounds at their home on December 14th.

On December 14th, police were called to the home of Rob and Michele and found two people with stab wounds, who were later identified as the couple, according to NBC News.

On the following day, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that Rob and Michele had been murdered. A subsequent investigation revealed their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was responsible, according to a press release issued on December 15th.

I was shocked to learn that Nick was taken into custody on December 14th, facing a murder investigation. He’s currently being held without the possibility of bail, which is a very serious situation. It’s a difficult time, and we’re all waiting for more information to come to light.

On December 16th, he was charged with two counts of murder, with prosecutors alleging the killings involved multiple victims. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney, he used a knife as a deadly weapon in the crimes.

Nick—who is being represented by lawyer Alan Jackson—has not yet entered a plea.

TopMob News has reached out to reps for the Reiner family for comment but has not heard back.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m deeply saddened to share the news of Rob and Michele’s passing. Their children, Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 27, have confirmed the heartbreaking loss. In a statement to Variety, they asked for privacy as they navigate this incredibly difficult time, and I certainly respect and echo that request. My heart goes out to the entire family.

Rob’s oldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, remembered what it was like growing up with her mother, the late Penny Marshall, and the director of When Harry Met Sally. She said she had seen her mother just the day before.

Speaking with NBC News, the 61-year-old said his family was the best, and he was too shocked to find the words to express his feelings.

Rob Reiner, the director behind beloved films like The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, Misery, and Stand By Me, also directed Being Charlie (2015). This film was special because it was co-written by his son, Nick, and inspired by Nick’s own experiences with addiction and substance abuse.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, Nick explained that the experiences weren’t his own life, but rather stories he’d gathered from the places he’d visited.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE what he’s been through! He’s only 32, but he’s fought so hard against addiction. It wasn’t just a quick thing, either – he’s actually been to rehab SEVENTEEN times! Can you even imagine? And at his lowest points, he was actually homeless. It just breaks my heart, but it makes me admire him even MORE that he’s still here and fighting.

Look, I’ve seen this pattern so many times. This man was telling me that when he tried to live life on his terms, refusing the help and pathways offered to him, he faced homelessness. It really highlights how crucial support systems can be, but also how fiercely independent some people are – even when it means a difficult road.

Nick explained that difficult experiences shaped him into the person he is today. He’s now been back in Los Angeles with his family for a while and has adjusted to being home, but he went through a long and challenging period before that.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner sadly passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, had spoken openly about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which explored the topic of substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 17 times before turning 30.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted his experiences with homelessness, stating he had lived on the streets in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks without shelter, and admitted it was a difficult time.

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.

In a 2018 interview on the Dopey podcast, he described a period where he was high on stimulants – likely cocaine and another drug – and stayed awake for days. He said this led to him damaging things in his guest house by punching them after going through a difficult 10-round sparring session.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

According to two sources familiar with the event, Nick was causing disturbances at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

Jane Fonda saw Rob and Michele the night before their tragic deaths.

The actress shared on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed healthy and happy. She expressed being deeply saddened and shocked by the news.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home who were later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

As a lifestyle expert, I often find myself discussing safety and security, and unfortunately, that sometimes means addressing tragic events. In this case, the detectives specializing in homicide – specifically within the Robbery Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section – began looking into exactly what happened and how these individuals lost their lives. They’re really the ones piecing together the details to understand the full story.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele didn’t die from natural causes; they appeared to have been stabbed, according to a source close to the Reiner family who spoke with NBC News.

According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were victims of homicide.

Around 9 p.m. on December 14th, while the police were investigating, Nick was caught on camera buying a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station near USC in downtown Los Angeles. According to footage obtained by MS NOW, he was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and carrying a red backpack.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated their investigation showed Rob and Michele’s son caused their deaths.

Police announced the arrest of Nick Reiner around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is currently being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

Michelle Obama shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 15th that she and Barack Obama had plans to meet with Rob and Michele on the day they tragically passed away.

On December 16th, TopMob News confirmed that attorney Alan Jackson—known for previously defending high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read—has been hired to represent Nick, who was arrested two days prior in connection with his parents’ murder.

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to publicly charge Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t yet been given medical approval to appear in court.

According to reports, officials stated that all inmates require medical clearance before being taken to court. They are optimistic that the individual in question will receive this clearance tomorrow, allowing him to be brought in.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m following this developing story closely. Just yesterday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that his office will be filing formal charges against Nick. He’s facing two counts of first-degree murder, and because of the nature of the case, it’s being considered a multiple murder scenario, which carries significant weight.

The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with an additional allegation: personally using a deadly weapon – a knife – during the attack on his parents.

He explained that if convicted, the charges could result in a life sentence with no chance of release, or potentially the death penalty.

Nick was formally charged Dec. 16.

Police believe Rob and Michele were likely killed about 12 hours before their bodies were found around 3 p.m. on December 14th.

According to a press release on December 16th, the district attorney stated the murders happened around dawn on December 14th.

According to a press release from the District Attorney on December 16th, Nick is accused of killing his parents by stabbing them. Investigators say he used a knife as the weapon.

Nick made his first court appearance on December 17th at the Los Angeles Supreme Court. He was wearing a blue garment designed to prevent self-harm and was in shackles. He didn’t formally respond to the charges against him, but scheduled an arraignment hearing for January 7th.

I was heartbroken to learn the official cause of death for Rob and Michele. The medical examiner confirmed they both died from multiple sharp force injuries – essentially, several cuts or stab wounds from a sharp object. It’s just… devastating.
