Rob Reiner, Wife Michele’s Murder Investigation: Everything to Know

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner‘s deaths are at the center of a police investigation.

Rob Reiner, the director of When Harry Met Sally, and his wife of 36 years were found dead at their Los Angeles home on December 14th. A source told NBC News that they appeared to have died from stab wounds.

Police announced on December 15th that the Reiners were victims of a homicide following the discovery of a disturbing scene, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Authorities stated that the investigation showed Nick Reiner, age 32 and son of Robert and Michele Reiner, caused their deaths. He has been arrested and charged with murder, and is currently being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

According to reports, Nick had a disagreement with his father, 78, the day before his arrest. Sources told People magazine that the argument happened at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th.

Friends of the family also confirmed the disagreement, telling the Los Angeles Times that people at the party noticed Nick – Rob’s son with Michele, as well as Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 28 – behaving oddly.

After Rob’s death, his eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner (whom he adopted with his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall), shared that she had seen him at a family get-together the day before he died.

The 61-year-old actress, known for her role in A League of Their Own, said she comes from a wonderful family. She added that she was speechless and in shock.

Many in the film industry felt the same way, including actress Kathy Bates, who collaborated with Rob on the 1990 film Misery.

The Oscar-winning actor said in a statement on December 14th that they loved Rob, describing him as a talented and compassionate person who constantly pushed his creative boundaries through diverse films.

She explained that he completely changed her life. Michele was a talented photographer who took the stunning photos for the Misery campaign. She said she feels deeply saddened for both of them.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner sadly passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, had spoken openly about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which focused on substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 17 times before turning 30.

Oh my gosh, you wouldn’t BELIEVE it. He actually told People magazine this – he was homeless, like, multiple times! He said he was living on the streets in Maine, then New Jersey, and even Texas! Can you imagine? He didn’t sugarcoat it either, he said he spent nights, weeks out there, and it was just… not a good time. It breaks my heart just thinking about it, but it also makes me admire him even more, you know?

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.

He described an incident from 2018 on the Dopey podcast, explaining that he spent ten rounds sparring in his guest house while high on stimulants – likely cocaine and another substance. He was awake for days and ended up damaging things by punching them.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department was called to a home in Brentwood, California, to investigate a death, following a report received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

The Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele Reiner did not die from illness or old age; they appear to have been stabbed, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke to NBC News.

According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were victims of homicide.

Police determined that Rob and Michele’s son, Nick, caused their deaths. He wasn’t arrested until several hours after their bodies were discovered.

Police announced the arrest of Nick Reiner around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is currently being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

TopMob News was not able to find a lawyer on file to speak on Nick Reiner’s behalf.

After Rob’s death, Tracy said she’d seen her father the day before his passing.

She told NBC News that she came from a wonderful family and was completely stunned, saying, ‘I don’t know what to say.’
