Eva Erickson is recounting one of the scarier moments of her life.
A former contestant on Survivor described how she was lucky to avoid injury during the shooting at Brown University on December 13th, which sadly resulted in two deaths and nine injuries.
In an Instagram video posted on December 13th, Eva shared that she left her graduate office around 4 p.m., just before the shooting began. Luckily, she had already left the building and took shelter in the school’s indoor track and basketball facility.
The 25-year-old said they were still in the building when the shooting started, and left within five minutes of the shooter arriving.
In a recent video, Eva, a PhD student in engineering at an Ivy League university, explained that she wasn’t permitted back to her apartment until around 1:30 AM.
She described the campus as feeling really strange today. She said everyone is rushing to leave Brown and go home to their families, hoping to feel safer there.
Driving past Barus & Holley, the site of the shooting, was particularly upsetting for her.

Eva described returning to find the door she’d just walked through sealed off with boards and crime scene tape, still surrounded by police. She said that was the moment the reality of the situation truly struck her, because until then, she’d felt safe.
Eva, the captain of the hockey team, said she checked in with her friends and classmates during the first lockdown and everyone seemed to be doing okay. However, after the shooting, she found herself dwelling on all the things that could have happened.
She went on to say she kept imagining it could have been one of her friends, or even one of her teammates.

Eva explained that people often believe these kinds of things won’t happen to them, or at their school. She pointed out that even at a place like Brown University, it did happen, and could have happened anywhere – and that’s what makes it so frightening.
Eva concluded her video by expressing hope for improvement and stating, “We can’t continue to see this happen in schools nationwide.”
She wasn’t sure if she had what she needed to fix the problem, but she believed someone else did, and that someone could make things better.
