Rob Reiner is known as a fantastic director, but he also showed his comedic skills as an actor, notably appearing in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. He’s probably most famous for directing beloved films like The Princess Bride and Stand by Me.
Before Rob Reiner became a director with his first movie, This is Spinal Tap in 1984, he was a well-known actor. He famously played Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the sitcom All in the Family, and also appeared in other shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and New Girl. He had a solid acting career with roles in films too, including Sleepless in Seattle.
While he often had smaller roles, like in The Wolf of Wall Street, he consistently made an impression. Even acting alongside stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Robbie, he proved he had the talent that led to his initial success on television sitcoms.

I loved seeing Rob Reiner as Jordan Belfort’s dad, “Mad Max,” in The Wolf of Wall Street! He played this really intense, quick-to-anger guy who was also an accountant for his son. It was cool because even though Jordan was totally reckless, his dad often tried to be the voice of reason, but honestly, Jordan rarely listened!
Though Reiner appears in only a few scenes, he really shines. He’s first seen in a funny moment where he gets incredibly upset when a phone call interrupts his viewing of The Equalizer. He instantly switches to a strange British accent when he answers, but quickly reverts to anger after ending the call.
Honestly, the best moment in the whole movie for me is when he finally loses it with Jordan and his crew over how much money they’re blowing. It’s insane – they apparently dropped $26,000 on one dinner! And it’s even better because Donnie, played by Jonah Hill, just keeps pushing his buttons, making him angrier and angrier. It’s a really powerful scene.
While known for his intense outbursts in the film, Reiner’s performance wasn’t just yelling. There were touching, quieter moments between him and his son, and Max clearly loved Jordan, even when he was upset with him. Reiner proved he could be subtle when the script allowed, but he was most striking during his louder, more passionate scenes.
Despite the wild and often outrageous behavior in The Wolf of Wall Street, the film is surprisingly funny. While his role was relatively small, Matthew McConaughey’s performance is a highlight, showcasing the talent that made him a star both as an actor and a filmmaker.
