Robert Duvall, a celebrated actor and icon of American film, has died at the age of 95.
Though he appeared in many famous films like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, and Apocalypse Now, the acclaimed character actor is best remembered for winning his sole Academy Award for his performance as the down-on-his-luck country singer Mac Sledge in the 1983 film Tender Mercies.
This article from TopMob features film critic Barry Norman revisiting Robert Duvall’s career through a 1990 TV appearance. Norman discusses how, despite winning an Oscar, Duvall remained primarily a supporting actor rather than becoming a major leading man.
The surprising thing about Tender Mercies isn’t how much it boosted Robert Duvall’s career, but that it didn’t achieve even greater success. In almost every respect, the film was a triumph, particularly for Duvall himself.
Horton Foote played a key role in creating the film and even shared a Best Picture nomination. He also won the Academy Award for Best Actor, while the film’s screenplay earned him an Oscar. Bruce Beresford received a Best Director nomination, and the song “Over You” from the movie won the award for Best Song.
Considering Duvall’s strong history – including four previous Oscar nominations for films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now – his performance in Tender Mercies really should have cemented his status as a major star. Unfortunately, the film didn’t perform well in theaters, and that likely prevented him from reaching that level of recognition.
The film didn’t perform well financially, reinforcing the idea that critical praise and awards don’t guarantee success – ultimately, it’s audience numbers that make a star.
Honestly, even when it came out, I always figured this movie would be a tough sell to most people. It just wasn’t made for everyone, you know?
I was really moved by this quiet, understated film. It follows a country singer battling alcoholism – and Robert Duvall actually sings all the songs himself, which is incredible – as he tries to turn his life around. He finds a path to doing so when he marries a young widow and becomes a stepfather. It’s not a flashy movie; it’s all about capturing a feeling and really getting to know the characters. Ultimately, it’s a hopeful story about how everyone deserves a second chance, no matter what mistakes they’ve made.

Despite being set in rural Texas, the film feels more European in style than American, and it’s quite different from typical Hollywood movies. It likely would have found a larger audience today, as moviegoers are generally older now. In 1983, however, audiences were mostly teenagers looking for fast-paced excitement, and this film didn’t quite fit the bill.
Ultimately, even with the critical acclaim and Academy Award, Tender Mercies simply reinforced what audiences already understood: Robert Duvall was a remarkably talented character actor. The film didn’t elevate him beyond that role and into leading man status.
Some might say Robert Duvall doesn’t look like a typical movie star, but that doesn’t really hold up. Dustin Hoffman doesn’t fit the glamorous mold either, yet he’s undeniably a star. It’s true Duvall is bald, unlike Hoffman, but so is Sean Connery, and he’s a huge star. Physical appearance clearly isn’t everything.

I believe Duvall’s biggest problem is actually his talent. He completely transforms himself for each role, becoming the character entirely. He seems to step back from his own personality, allowing the character to take over.
A star’s personality always shines through, even for a skilled actor like Robert De Niro. You’re always aware it’s De Niro performing, despite how convincing he is. Robert Duvall is different. He completely transforms into his characters – you don’t see Duvall at all, just the roles he plays, whether it’s a Mafia advisor, a troubled colonel, or a country musician.
It’s unusual and impressive for an actor to possess this quality, but unfortunately, in the often-flashy world of movies, it doesn’t usually lead to starring roles or high salaries.
