Robert Irwin isn’t jiving around his lack of Dancing With the Stars prep.
The wildlife conservationist admitted he wasn’t feeling his best before starting rehearsals with his dance partner, Witney Carson.
Robert, 21, shared with TopMob News correspondent Will Marfuggi at the Dancing With the Stars premiere on September 16th how the conversation with his partner, Witney, went. He said Witney asked him, ‘You’ve known for four months you were going to be on this show? What have you done to get ready?’ And Robert jokingly replied, ‘Nothing!’
Although Robert hadn’t physically trained, he had some idea of what to expect. He’d watched his sister, Bindi Irwin, compete – and win – with her partner, Derek Hough, on season 21 back in 2015.
Robert shared that he had a general idea of what to expect from the show because his sister had participated before. However, it completely exceeded all of his expectations. He credited the fantastic team, talented cast, and especially his amazing dance partner for making it happen. After ten years of work, he expressed how honored he was to be a part of it.
His older sister, who came to support him during his performance about Australia, simply told him to have fun and not take things too seriously.
He recalled Bindi telling him to ‘take a breath and enjoy every second.’ When Bindi learned Witney was his dance partner, she said she had no advice to offer about dancing – he was clearly in good hands. She encouraged him to really savor the experience, because it would pass quickly.

It took Robert a little while to find his footing in practice, but all his effort really showed when he and Witney performed their jive. They earned the highest score of the night, which Witney was thrilled about.
“That’s amazing!” Witney exclaimed to Robert. “The fact that you’re competing with professional dancers and doing so well – even reaching the top – really shows how much effort you’ve put in.”
Robert agreed, giving credit to his pro partner, “I think we’re a good team.”
