Rocket & Groot Isn’t the Only Origin Story We Want James Gunn to Show Us

James Gunn didn’t reveal how Rocket Raccoon and Groot first met in the Marvel movies, and fans are hoping he’ll do better with his new DC Universe. Though Rocket and Groot were already friends when they appeared in the first *Guardians of the Galaxy* in 2014, Gunn’s last Marvel film, *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*, didn’t show us how they originally connected. Now, with his new DC projects, there’s another character origin story fans are eager to see, but Gunn might choose to leave untold.

James Gunn revealed on the podcast *The Morning After* that there’s a hidden history behind the character Weasel. While he doesn’t know exactly what was referenced in *Creature Commandos*, Gunn knows Weasel’s origins. He playfully suggested this surprising backstory might never be revealed, as finding the time to tell it could be difficult. However, Gunn hinted that Weasel’s untold story could be explored later within the DC Universe.

When Could James Gunn Show Us Weasel’s Origin Story in the DCU?

Weasel first appeared in the 2021 film *The Suicide Squad*, which was James Gunn’s initial project within the DC universe. Sean Gunn voiced the quirky character in both the film and the animated series *Creature Commandos*, the first show in the newly rebooted DCU. *Creature Commandos* revealed the reason Weasel was imprisoned at Belle Reve: he was wrongly convicted of murdering children at Sunnyhill School. The show revealed he had actually been trying to save his friends after humans caused their deaths – a deeply tragic backstory. However, this isn’t Weasel’s complete origin story.

Even though James Gunn has spoken about the DC Universe’s direction, there’s still a chance we’ll learn more about Weasel’s past before he encountered the kids at Sunnyhill School. This seems even more likely now that a second season of *Creature Commandos* is planned. Since Weasel will be back with Task Force M in season two, the show could reveal his origins. It remains to be seen if the DCU version of Weasel will have the same history as the character from the comic books.

First appearing in 1985’s *The Fury of Firestorm #35*, John Monroe, nicknamed “Weasel” due to his small build, was a Stanford University student in the 1960s who suffered bullying. This led him down a dark path, developing sociopathic tendencies and ultimately becoming a delusional serial killer disguised as a teacher. He created a lightweight, clawed fur suit to enact revenge on those who had tormented him as a child. While the DC Universe version of Weasel appears different – not a person in a suit – fans hope James Gunn will delve into the character’s hidden past and reveal the tragic truth behind this complex antihero.
