The ROG Xbox Ally has arrived, marking Xbox’s official entry into the world of handheld gaming.
Because the Ally isn’t as powerful as some other consoles, it benefits from a little extra help to achieve its best performance.
We’re here to guide you through some simple steps to help you get the most out of your ROG Xbox Ally.
ROG Xbox Ally best settings: How to get the best performance
Update everything
When you initially set up your Ally, you’ll need to install several updates to ensure it has the newest software.
Launch Armoury Crate and go to the ‘Update Center’. This is where you can easily update your drivers.
Then, open the MyASUS app and go to the ‘Customer Support’ section to download and install any available driver updates.
As a gamer, I’m really excited about these updates! They’ll keep my computer’s processor and graphics card running with the newest software, which means I should get better performance for a long time – we’re talking months, maybe even years! It’s great to know my system will stay up-to-date and keep running smoothly.
Optimise settings
Okay, so you want to tweak things like resolution and VRAM to get the best performance? Luckily, Armoury Crate makes it super easy. I can adjust all that stuff right from there without a headache!
Within the Armoury Crate app, go to the ‘Performance’ section. There, you’ll find an ‘Operating Mode’ setting where you can enable ‘Turbo’ for maximum performance. Keep in mind that Turbo mode uses a lot more battery, so it’s recommended to use it while your device is plugged in.
Now, head to ‘GPU Settings’, and use the following settings:
- Memory Assigned to GPU: Auto
- Radeon Super Resolution (RSR): On
- AMD Fluid Motion Frames: On
- Radeon Anti-Lag: Off
- Radeon Boost: On
- Radeon Chill: Off
- Radeon Image Sharpening: Off
Next, open up ‘Eco Assist’ and turn on ‘CPU Boost’.
To keep your computer running smoothly, it’s a good idea to leave some free space on your SSD. Avoid filling it up completely with games and programs. You can also free up space by removing pre-installed Windows apps you don’t need, such as Office or Copilot.
In-game settings
You’ve already configured Ally for optimal performance, so now let’s fine-tune the settings within the game itself.
If you mainly play smaller, independent games, you likely won’t notice any issues – they should run smoothly with all the graphics settings turned up.
If you’re trying to play more challenging games, you might encounter some difficulties. Since we can’t provide ideal settings for every game, here are some general tips to help boost your performance.
Change your resolution to 720p to give yourself higher frames in exchange for lower quality.
We suggest starting with the lowest graphics settings in most games. If performance is good, you can try increasing the texture quality to medium.
For the best performance, disable V-Sync, Antialiasing, and Dynamic Resolution Scaling.
To keep your game running smoothly, we suggest limiting your frame rate to what your system can consistently achieve. For example, if you’re averaging around 40 frames per second, set a cap at 40 FPS. This can help prevent big dips in performance during gameplay.
Finally, explore using mods. Since The Ally is a PC, you can find performance-boosting modifications on sites like Nexus Mods that can significantly improve frame rates in some games – it’s definitely something to consider!
