Rory McIlroy isn’t accepting any backswings aimed at his family.
Reports indicate that the Irish golfer stood up for his wife, Erica Stoll, after spectators heckled her-and even threw beer at her-during the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York.
“Erica is doing well,” said Rory, 36, to reporters after the game on Sept. 29. “She’s a remarkably strong person and navigated everything this week with grace and composure, just as she always does. I care for her deeply and we’re planning to enjoy a celebration tonight.”
Although the couple-parents to 5-year-old daughter Poppy Mcllroy-are doing well now, things got a little crazy during the three-day tournament. While Rory and Erica were walking to his next shot, a fan threw a beer can and hit Erica in the head. Rory immediately noticed and went to speak to the fan in the crowd before security guided him back to continue playing.
But Erica wasn’t alone in experiencing a negative reception at the event, where Team Europe won against Team USA.
On the same day, Rory told someone heckling him to “shut the fk up” while getting ready for his 16th hole. Immediately after making a great shot, the fans began to boo and laugh at him. He then appeared to shout a few curse words in the direction of the crowd.
I responded a couple of times because their comments bothered me, but we aimed to deal with everything professionally and with grace,” he explained in another interview with ABC News on Sept. 29. “Generally, I think we succeeded. It was a difficult week for everyone involved, but we ultimately proved them wrong with how we played.”
However, even with his play aside, Rory feels the spectators shouldn’t be unwelcoming to him or any other golfers on the course.
“I don’t believe we should tolerate that kind of behavior in golf,” McIlroy stated during the Team Europe press conference on Sept. 28. “I feel golf deserves to be held to a more rigorous standard than what we witnessed this week.”
After all, he believes the sport has the “ability to unite people.”
Oh my gosh, he’s so right! Golf isn’t just a game, you know? It really teaches you so much about life. Like, it’s all about etiquette and honestly, learning to play by the rules is huge. And the respect! It teaches you how to respect everyone involved. But honestly, what we saw this week? It was just… not okay. It really shouldn’t be what’s considered acceptable behavior at the Ryder Cup. It just isn’t the spirit of the game, you know?
